CARTRIDGE-CLIP.
SPPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,038, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed September 17, 1894:. Serial N0. 523,2l8- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROSWELL F. COOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips for assembling and depositing packs of cartridges in repeating rifles of the species described in a separate patent application filed by me May 29, 1894, Serial No. 512,840, and said invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed whereby the clip is adapted to be inserted into a permanent magazine, and then withdrawn by external access to deposit the cartridges in the magazine.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side view of the cartridge-clip with a pack of cartridges assembled therein; Fig. 2, a plan view, the cartridges being removed; Fig. 3, a rear end view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal sectional view at 'y' 11/, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, an elevation of the reverse side of the clip from that shown in Fig. 1.
The clip K is composed of a single piece of spring sheet metal formed into a channel, having retaining spurs 22 at the lower end at which the cartridges are introduced and afterward disengaged for deposit in the magazine. A retaining handle 23, is provided at the upper end of the clip which practically closes the channel serving both to retain the cartridges and to manipulate the clip after its insertion into the magazine of the gun, as described in my aforesaid separate application, Serial No. 512,840. A groove 24, formed in the side of the clip by embossing the metal serves as a head guide for the cartidges, and this guiding groove is tapered from the bottom toward the top, extending the entire length of the cartridge channel, whereby the different angles assumed. by the cartridge heads are provided for and accurately conformed to and the said heads prevented from interlocking or obstructing the free forward delivery of each top cartridge after they are deposited in the magazine, and during the withdrawal of the clip from the magazine the cartridges slide outward the more readily by means of said taper.
An advantage is obtained in constructing the cartridge holder or clip K so that the cartridges are expelled from the same end of the channel at which they are inserted, namely: that the guiding groove 24C, for the heads of cartridges may be tapered and narrowed more closely and effectually than if the cartridges were to be passed continuously through said channel, and the heads of the cartridges at the varying angles which they occupy when packed in the clip, may thereby be supported and afterward deposited with greater certainty of proper relation in the magazine than heretofore, namely: with the flange of each cartridge in front of the flange of the adjacent cartridge beneath, which is a most important condition in a side feed magazine. The head guiding groove 24:, is, furthermore, formed by an embossment of the plate K, in which the back of the groove is raised from the external surface of the plate. A shoulder is thereby formed on the internal surface of the plate K, for retaining the cartridges in the U-shaped channel by means of their flanged heads, and by the raised formation of the groove the remaining internal surface of the wing of the plate extending from the shoulder of the groove is permittedto lay firmly against and hold the shell of the cartridge, which is of less diameter than the head, in the manner distinctly seen in Fig. 4.
The wing 80, serves as a partition between the magazine and the receiver of the gun to use the gun as a single loader when the clip is partly raised in its position of insertion as will be more readily understood by reference to said separate application.
I claim- 1. An assembling clip for cartridges adapted for the admission and expulsion of cartridges at one end of the channel, provided with a head guiding groove tapering from the closed end toward the open end of said channel, for the purpose set forth.
2. An assembling clip for cartridges adapted Signed at Iiion, in the county of Herkiiner for the admission and expulsion of the carand State of New York, this 14th day of July, 'tridges at one end of the channel, provided A. D. 1894.
with a head guiding groove substantially as ROSWELL F. COOK. 5 described tapering from one end toward the Witnesses:
other of the said channel for the purpose de- WILFRID HARTLEY,
