EDMUND F. SUTTON,
PATENT @Erica 0E NEW YORK, N Y. A
IMPROVED LAMP-CLEANER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,89, dated April l0, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that l, EDMUND F. SUTTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a lamp-v chimney cleaner constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the manner of using my invention in cleaning the lamp-chimney.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The invention consists in a novel combination, with a fixed wiper secured upon a suitable shaft or stick, of an elastic self-adjusting wiping-finger in such a way that the lixed wiper cleans the upper or narrow portion of the lamp-chimney, and the elastic wiping-finger cleans the lower or bulging portion thereof, and so that the fixed wiper and the elastic finger are cach kept in contact with the chimney by the action of the other.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is a shaft or stick, one end of which, at a, constitutes the handle of the apparatus, and upon the opposite end of which is secured a fixed wiper, B, the said wiper consisting simply of apiece of cloth, felt, or other suitable material secured in any proper way to one side of the said end of the stick A. During the operationof the apparatus in cleaning lthe lamp-chimney E this xed wiper acts upon the inner surface of the small or narrow portion thereof, as shown in Fig. l.
Situated at the lower end of the xed wiper B, and extending transversely through the stick A, is a narrow slot, c, through which is passed the end of a curved spring, d, the said end of the spring being rrnly attached to the stick by rivets e e, and the main length ofthe said spring` being situated upon the side of the stick opposite to that upon which the tiXed wiper is placed and bent back or downward toward the handle a, and also curved so as to nearlycorrespond with the longitudinal curvature of the lower or bulging portion of the chimney. This main portion of the spring c is covered with cloth, felt, or other suitable material sewed or otherwise secured thereto, and constituting with the said spring the clastic self-adjusting wiping-finger l) of the apparatas. During the operation of cleaning the chimney this elastic wiping-linger D is in close contact with the inner surface ofthe lower or bulging part thereof, as clcarlyshown in Fig. 2. TheI apparatus being placed in the chimney, as represented in the said iigure, the chimncyiscleaned by turningor rotating the cleaner by means of the handle a., the fixed wiper B rubbing upon and cleaning` the upper or narrow portion of the chimney, and the elastic finger rubbing upon and cleaning the loweror bulging portion thereof. During such operation ofthe cleaner the elasticity ofthe wipingfinger l) not only causes it to conform to the longitudinal curvature of the bulge of the chimney, but also forces the fixed wiper B back against the opposite sideof the chimney in the upper or narrow portion thereof, so that the-fixed wiper and the elastic finger D operate to press each other against the inner surface of those portions of the chimney contiguous to each.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The elastic self-adjusting wiping-finger on one side of the stick or shaft, in combination with the fixed wiper on the opposite side of the stick or shaft, the two operating together substantially as herein specified.
EDMUND F. SUTTON.
