DANIEL O. FOGLESONG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR-DRESSING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,826, dated May 7, 1895.
Application filed December 13, 1894:. Serial No. 531,696. (No model.)
barbers and hair-dressers, and has for its ob-' ject to provide an arrangement that will facilitate the process of shampooing, hair-dressing, and that of administering medicated vapor treatment to the scalp.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation in perspective of an apparatus embodying the improved features; Fig. 2, a horizontal section; Fig.3, a broken-away vertical section on line 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 4, a broken-away vertical section on line 4, Fig. 5; and Fig. 5, a broken-away vertical section on line 5, Fig. 4.
A may represent the different parts 'of the supporting-frame; A, a base,and A a table top.-
A platform B is mounted on the base, on
which is seated a steam-generating vessel B,
which is preferably of the form shown. This generatorv has a hinged connection with the platform, as at a, so that it may be stood on end, as shown in Fig. 2, or held at an inclined angle between a vertical and a horizorftal position. The lower end of a lever a is attached to the steam-generator, as at (1 Fig. 2. The upper part of this lever engages loosely with a radius-bar a and has a sliding movement thereon from an upright to a horizontal position, in moving thegenerator. The radiusbar is provided with a number of notches a", with which lover a is adapted to have alocked engagement in holding the generator in any position to which it is capable of being adjusted.
The steam or'vapor vessel is provided wit a corrugated. bottom a to increase the heatin g surface. The platform is perforated as at a, through which the required heat is received with the source of supply.
The lower end of a telescopic steam or vapor-pipe b has a pivotal connection with the rear end of the generator, as at b, Fig.1. The upper end of this pipe extends loosely into the pipe-section b forming a telescopic connection therewith, so as to conform to the changes of position of the generator.
The telescopic steam-pipe discharges into an enlarged tube 0, the lower end of which is secured in a collar 19 supported in the frame.
A large tube 0 incloses the tube 0 and has a telescopic connection therewith, as shown. A drum-like receptacle D is mounted on the upper end of tube 0, and is in two parts hinged together, as at b. This receptacle is open at one end and closed at the other. The closed end is provided with an opening in which is fitted a hand-plate b Ascreen-shelf, b, is located inside of the receptacle in line with the hand-plate opening. The receptacle is provided in the upper side next the open-end with an open screened surface 19'.
The tube G is provided with a rack-bar, d, with which a pawl d is adapted to engage, as shown in Fig. 1. This provides for the lengthening or shortening of the telescopic connection in accordance with the height of the chair and the position of the person in bringing the device into position for use.
The tube 0 is provided, near its lower end, with a wire shelf d2, Fig. 5, to which access may be had through a door 61 A sponge may be placed on this shelf that has been charged with some medicinal agent when a diseased scalp is to be treated and which will be absorbed by the passing vapor or hot-air current. A hot-air tube extends from the platform on which the steam-generator is seated up into the tube 0. The lower end of the hot-air-tube E is clamped in one end of an arm g. The opposite end of this arm is pivoted, as at g',and is connected with the steamgenerator by a link g Now, when the generator is turned up on end, as shown in Fig. 2, the hot-air-pipe is simultaneously moved into position over the burner and a volume of hot-air is conducted into the drum instead of steam or vapor, and the hair thoroughly dried. When the generator is in its vertical from a gas-burner a the pipe a connecting ICO position the water submerges and traps the end of the steam-pipe, so that no steam or moisture can ascend into the drum during the application of hot-air. When 'the generator is set on an incline, that is, say half-way between a vertical and horizontal position, the opening into the steam-pipe is closed, so that neither steam or hot air passes up to the drum; thus modifying the treatment when the person cannot stand a continuous action.
When the steampipe is submerged the steam can escape through a tube It and prevent a pressure from forming in the generator. The generator may also be charged with water through this tube, and the volume of the same conveniently ascertained by inserting a gage-stick. hen the generator is in a horizontal position the end of this tube is below the water-line.
In practical application, the head of the person and the adjacent part of the apparatus may be covered by a hood of any suitable fabric, so that the ascending steam-heat, or hot-air, may be conducted to the desired parts.
In treating the hair of women the drum may be thrown open as provided for and the tresses spread out over the screen-shelf on the inside, and by removing the hand'plate in the end, the hand may be inserted and the position of the tresses changed from time to time during the process. By this arrangement it is not possible for any cold air to enter the vapor or hot-air pipes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination with a supporting frame, provided with a base, of a platform, a steam-gem erator, seated thereon and having a hinged connection therewith, a telescopic steam-pipe, a drum, with which said steampipe communicates, a handdever, connected to the genera tor, and a notched radius-bar, whereby said generator may be adjusted to any position between a horizontal and a vertical one, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination with a supporting platform, of a steam-generator, having a hinged connection with said platform and adapted to be adjusted to any position between a horizontal and a vertical plane, a telescopic steam-pipe, having a pivotal connection with said generator, an enlarged tubular extension, into which the steam-pipe discharges, and a drum having escape openings and mounted on said tubular extension, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination with a steam generator, adapted to be adjusted to different positions, of a burner, located thereunder, a hot-air pipe, an arm, supporting said pipe, and a link connecting said arm and generator, whereby said hot-air pipe is brought into position over the burner when the generator is moved to a vertical position, substantially as set fortln DANIEL C. FOGLESONG. Witnesses:
L. M. FREEMAN, L. B. COUPLAND.
