3 Claims. (Cl. 12S-256) 'Ihis invention relates to Steamers and particularly to steamers used in .beauty parlors for scalp and hair treatments and is an improvement upon the apparatus disclosed in U. S. Letterslatent No. '1,421,756 issued on July 4th,

At the present time steam treatments for the scalp are extensively employed in barber shops -and beauty parlors for the thorough cleansing l1l0 of the scalp .and the treatment of unhealthy scalp and hair conditions, such as dandruif and falling hair. e In carrying out the present methcds, heated medicants, usually containing antiseptic liquids as well as oils are first applied 1,5 and rubbed into the scalp. The scalp is then subjected to steam by the application of steaming towels or by treatment with the general type @of-steamer disclosed in the above identified patent. It is essential to continuously apply the .20 'steamto the scalp to melt and thin the medi- -cants and open the pores. Greatly improved -results canbe obtained if provision is -made for massaging and manipulating the hair and scalp as the steam is being applied.

'I'he embodiment of \my invention illustrated comprises a' portable standard supported on a series of radially extending caster-equipped legs 5 and including a vertical tubular post 6 in which 65 is slidably and adjustably telescoped a supporting/ post '7. A suitable clamp 8 is provided for se'unng supporting post 7 in the desired elevated positions with reference to tubular post 6.
At the upper end of post 'I a suitable steam 70 generator is mounted enclosed within a cylin` drical ornamental casing 9 and supplied with electrical heating elements serviced by the cord 10. Tumbler switches 11 mounted in the peripheral walLof casing 9 are conveniently disposed 75 for operation. A liquid container 12 is supported from casing 9 disposed conveniently at the rear of said casing and operates on the barometric seal principle to supply liquid through the tubular supporting conduit 12a` to the tank 80 of the generator within casing 9.
The upper end of the cylindrical generator casing 9 is covered by a suitable closure cap 9a which carries an vampule holder 13 in the form of a centrally supported horizontal disk pro- 85 vided with a series of circumferentially arranged recesses for accommodating ampules or flasks C which contain medicants and oils to be used in the treatment. 9o
The steam generator is provided at its upper end with a radially projecting discharge conduit 14 terminating in a triangular shaped supporting bracket 14a which has a fiat outer surface.

dimensions and shape of the hood are such that abundant space is left between the edge of the i e hood anda nornal head to enable an operators hands and arms to be thrust beneath the hood 105' for massaging and manipulating the scalp and hair. Hood H has a symmetrical, rounded body positioned in such manner that a. towel 'l' or other flexible sheet may be draped about the top to snugly nt the contom' thereof. l1- o In the side portions of hood H and adjacent the rear of the hood elongated, kidney-shaped openings 15 are formed, oppositely arranged in such manner that an operator may stand behind the apparatus and thrust both hands through the two openings to conveniently massage the scalp and hair at the rear of the head, or, if desired, an operator may stand at the side of the machine, as clearly-shown in Fig. 3 and massage the scalp by thrusting one of her arms through one of the apertures 15 and the other arm between the hood and the head of the subject.
Hood H may be constructed of any suitable rigid material and has a considerably thickened triangular shaped attachment portion 16 at the rear end thereof which is adapted to be clamped tightly against the similarly shaped attachment bracket 14a. Screws 17 or the equivalent may be provided for securing the hood to said bracket. It will be noted that a rectangular recess 16a is formed in the lower edge of the triangular thickened portion 16 of the hood which recess is aligned with the passage through conduit 14 but is, however, of less height than the internal diameter of the conduit. This recess in conjunction with conduit 14 and an upturnediiange afforded by the rim of the hood forms a diminished outlet for the steam from the generator and serves to direct the discharged steam upwardly against the inner and rear wall ofthe hood.
The rim 18 referred to, as shown, is integrally constructed, covering the entire irregular lower edge of the hood proper and is secured thereto by suitable means such as the screws 19, see Fig. 1 The rim 18 has acontinuous upturned lip or flange disposed at the inner edge of the hood and extending throughout its entire length. This lip or flange constitutes a moisture collection trough and is declined from the front or visor portion of the hood to the connection of the hood at its rear with the bracket 14a in such manner that condensed moisture collected from all parts of the hood will be returned to the discharge conduit 14. The extreme rear portion of the rim 18, at 18a underlies the recess 16a and cooperates with the thickened portion 16 at its lower edge and with the conduit 14 in forming a continuation of the steam discharge passage.
In use the contents of the ampules C are heated by radiation from the top of the generator casing closure 9a as well as by convection currents of warm air passing upwardly through the generator casing through apertures 9b circumferentially arranged in the conical wall of the closure cap.
In certain treatments the warm liquids from the ampules are rubbed into the scalp andhair ofthe subject preliminary to the steaming treatment. The head of the subject is then properly placed beneath the hood H with the hood loosely surrounding the scalp area. The top and sides of the hood are then covered with a bath towel or other flexible sheet T, the rounded symmetrical contour and disposition of the hood being such that the towel or sheet will remain in place nicely covering the apertures 15 to prevent escape of steam therefrom. r f
Steam is discharged through the diminished passage 16a and is directed upwardly by the turned ange or lip at the rear of rim 18, the steam being deflected and diiused'by the dome-like surface of the interior of the hood and being thus .distributed and impinged against the hair and "scalp and the entire area within the hood is permeated with steam which serves to open the pores of the scalp and cleanse the skinand hair. Application of this steam thins the oil or other medicants applied to the hair and scalp, enabling the same to penetrate to the roots of the hair and enter the pores.
To facilitate the distribution of the medicants the operator may thrust her hands and arms through the massaging apertures 15 while the steamingjtreatment is beinggiven and vigorously massage and manipulate thescalp andhair'. The kidney-shape of the apertures 15 provide the requisite freedom for massaging movement of the arms. Fig. 3 illustrates one manner in which the front `and rear portions of the scalp may be massaged. It will be noted that the towel or sheet is not removed from the hood, the operator merely reaching under the edges of the towel and thrusting her arms through the apertures. It will also be seen that the entire back portion and crown of the scalp may be massaged through the two massage apertures 15, the operator standing-at the-back of the device or that one of the sides and part of the front portion of-the-'scalp-may be massaged in the manner shown in Fig. 3 or,fif i desired,-the operator may stand at the front of the hood and massage the entire front portionlofthe scalp by inserting her handsv and arms be.- tween the front of the hood and the scalp.

From the foregoing description it will be seen 110 that I have provided an improved, simplified and highly eicient portable scalp steamer adapted to be manufactured atrelatively low cost; It will further be seen that with my apparatus provision is made for effectively massaging the scalp'115 while the steam is being applied, as well as for.` collection and removal oi? moisturecondensed throughtout the entire area of the inner wall-.of

It will, of course, be understood that various 1'1'20 changes may bemade in the form, details, propore tions and arrangement of the parts. without departing from the scope of my invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capableoiz carrying out the objects above,set=forth and in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and dened in the appended claims.r i
