H. J. DAVIS. ROTARY ENGINE.
Patentedy May 7, 1895.
` erica.
HENRY JACKSON DAVIS, OF, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS TO HARRY WELLSOOFFIN, SAMUEL T. ECHOLS, AND GEORGE ROBERTk EARLY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROTARY ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 538,821, dated May '7, 1 895.
Application tiled Tilly Z6, 1894. Serial No. 518,655. (No model.)
Z'O all wwm/ 25 may 0011007701: The inside ot' each casing is provided with Beitknown thatLHENRYJA'oKsoN DAvIs,a a semi-circular recess B. The recesses are citizen of the United States, residing at Birturned and finished to form a circular cylin- 1ningham,in the countyof Jefferson and State der when both cases `are bolted together, a 5` of Alabama, have invented certain new and space being reserved for a circular plate to 55 useful Improvements in Rotary Engines; and revolve betweenV the casings, as hereinafter I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, described. T he'cylinder is provided with an clear, and exact description ofvthe invention, exhaust port' R placed at any desired posisuch as will enable others skilled in the art to ltion. y to Whichit appertains to make and use the same. A main shaft C is journaled in suitable 6o My inventionvrelates to that class of steam bearingsformed in the casings. VThe shaft exengines in which a piston revolves Within a tends through the casings on both sides,.and cylinderin a rotary direction; and the objects the usual stuffing boxes having glands D. D of my'improvement are, first, to provide an are formed on the outer ends of the shaft beari5 engine of that class of a simple and cheap conings, to secure a steam tight joint surround- 65 struction having a circular cylinder with a ciring the shaft. cular piston head attached by a plate to the A circular plate E is secured on the center main shaft the piston head rotating within the of the main shaft by anyof the usual methods. cylinder formed in the casings; second,to eon- On the periphery of the plate, a piston head zo struct a rotary engine having a vertical steam F is secured as shown, or in any other desir- 7o valve, and vertical cut ofi" valve inelosed in a able manner attached to the plate. The piston steam chest, the valves extending downward head body is formed circular and with acurve into the cylinder when the port is open'for the to fit the cylinder formed in the casings. The admission of steam, the valves Awhen raised by head is provided with spring packing rings G z5 the rotation of' the piston head shutting the ttted'in recesses formed in the head in the 75 steam off from'the cylinder; third,to providea usual manner. lThe back part of the head is y rotaryenginehavingan endless circularcylinformed tapering the taper ending even with der in Which acircular piston head rotates the the periphery of vthe circular plate to which head provided with packing rings to make it the head is attached. f 3o steam tight, the steam operating against the The casings on both sides near the recesses 8o head of the piston. I attain these objects by forming the cylinder are provided `with the the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyusual form of spring packing rings H. Fig. 2 is a verti- On the head of the casings an extension for 85 cal cross-sectional view of the same through a steam chest is formed, through which thel the center. Fig.3 is avertcal cross-sectional steam is admitted to the cylinder, a steam View ot' the steam valve through the center. pipe l being attached to the steam chest as Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the shown. A passage or portJleading from the 4o cut-off valve through the center. steam pipe extends across the steam chest 9o Similar letters refer to'similar parts through and turns downward opening. into the cylinout the several views. der. The topot the steam chestus lnclosed The casings A. A are made of cast iron or by a cover Q the cover secured with stud othersuitable metallic material. The casings bolts in the usual manner.
45 are provided with the usual flanges on the A circular plunger valve K having an ap- 95 outer edge and are secured together by bolts erture L through it to admit steam is fitted in through the anges in the usual manner. At acircular chamber formed in the steam chest.- the lower edge the casings are provided with The said valve when down with the point flanges turned at a right angl e, to form a base resting on the piston head plate, admits steam 5o on which the engine stands. through the port, and when raised by the Ico Y piston head, as shown by dotted lines, the valve closes the steam passage.
A flat cut off valve M having an aperture N through it to admit steam is fitted in grooves formed in the steam chest. The said valve when down forms a wall across the cylinder, to force the steam when admitted to follow the piston head. The valve when raised cuts the steam off from the admission port, preventing the steam from entering the cylinder until the valve is lowered to form the wall, when steam is again admitted to the cylinder as before described.
On the head of the valve K is fitted a bar O. The bar is attached to the valve head by anysuitable means. Thebarextendsthrough au aperture P formed in the steam chest, the` end of the bar resting on the head ofthe cut.v oit valve M as shown. When theengine is in operation, the rotation of the `piston "head,` will tirst raise the valve K, andA afterward raise the valve M.. The rotation of the head would rst release the valve K and allow it to drop, but it not being desirable toturn steam on until the c'ut off valve is lowered to place, the cut olf valve holds the steam valve up by the bar O resting on its head, and the cut olf valve M descending tirst forms the cylinder wall before steam is admitted to the cylinder.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what Iclaim as new,and desire to secure nby Letters Patent, is
l. In a rotary engine, the combination of the outer casiugs having a semicircular recess formed in each casing the recesses forming a circular cylinder when the casings are bolted together the head of the casings forming a steam chest, an exhaust port opening from the cylinder, an inlet steam port opening tothe l cylinder, a main shaft journaled in the casings the shaft provided with a vcircular plate mounted thereon, a piston head attached to the periphery of the plate the piston head provided with rings to make a contact with the walls of the cylinder the head formed with a convex taper extending back from the rings7 a steam valve operating in a chamber formed in the steam chest the valve extending downward in the cylinder and formed convex on the end to make a close contact therein, a cut .O valve operating in grooves formed in the steam chest the valve extending downward in the cylinder and formed convex ou the end to make -a close contact therein, both valves having openings to coincide with the steam port the valves operated by the rotation of the piston head, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
2. Ina rotary engine, the combination of the `casings secured together forming a circular cylinder, a main shaft journaled iu the casings having a piston head secured thereon, a steam chest formed on the head of the casings having a steam valve, and cnt ott valve operating therein, a barsecured on the headot' the steam valve the bar extending through an aperture formed in the steam chest, the end of the bar resting on the head of the cut off valve when both valves are up, the bar preventing the descent of the steam valve untill after the descent of the cut off valve, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY JACKSON DAVIS.
