COMPOSITE PIANO-PEDAL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,713, dated May 7, 1895.

Be it known that I, RIcHARD W. TANNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, Albany county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composite Piano-Pedals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pedal for pianos and other instruments and objects.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan view of my pedal with my usual hinge-bracket at its inner end; Fig. 2, a plan view of the shank; Fig. 3, an edge view of the shank; and Fig. I, a vertical sectional view of the toe of the pedal, somewhat enlarged, taken on line X X of Fig. 1.

In the building or construction of pianos, organs, and such like instruments, it is found to be desirable to have a pedal having an ornamental toe portion or one that will take a good polish, such as brass, nickel, &c., but heretofore, in order to accomplish this end, it has been the usual practice to make the entire pedal, toe and shank of the same material, and where brass has been used, the metal being of indifferent strength, it has been necessary to make the entire pedal very heavy and thus very expensive.

In order to overcome this difiiculty, I have provided a pedal composed of a cast iron shank 2 and a toe 1 of any other desired metal or substance, united together forming a complete pedal and I have therefore called my improved device a composite pedal. shank 2 I make of cast iron or other cheap substance and on the forward end I form a tongue 3, preferably, having opening 4 and an indent 6 in the forward end of the tongue, but the indent may be a simple opening like 4 if desired. On the under side of the pedal and under the tongue preferably, I form an ofiset 5 which strengthens the tongue and pedal and fills the opening in the instrument case where the pedal passes through it. hen the toe 1 is united with the shank 2, the

7, 7, pass through the openings 4 and 6 and are upset or riveted holding the toe and shank firmly together forming a strong composite pedal and when the toe portion is polished or otherwise rendered ornamental it presents a pleasing appearance, and the pedal is much .cheaper than if made entirely of brass or other costly material and allows of makinga large stock of shanks 2 and keeping them on hand ready for having united thereto any kind of toe portion 1 that may be called for.

W Vhile I have shown the preferred way of uniting the toe and shank portion I do not confine myself thereto, as they may be united in various ways that will readily suggest themselves, nor do I confine myself to any particular material out of which to form the toe portion as it may be made of any desired material.

Having fully described my invention, so that those skilled in the art may know how to make and use the same, what claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A composite piano pedal consisting of a cast iron shank and a solid toe of different material, the said shank being provided with a laterally extending offset 5 and openings 4 and 6 and the said toe being provided with pins 7 7 which are passed through the said openings and upset to rivet the said parts together substantially as set forth.
