STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV M. VIERNOW, OE ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BEAM, JOIST, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,562, dated April 30, 1895.
.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GUSTAV M. VIERNOW, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Beams, Joists, dac., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to an improved form of metallic beam, joist, studdiug, or other like article for use in building, and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Broadly considered, it is not new to form a beam of two channeled bars placed back to back and riveted together, but my invention relates to an improvement on such form of beam whereby strength and other advantages are gained.
The drawing shows a transverse section of my improved beam, which consists of two bars l and 2, placed back to back and secured at their edges and ends by rivets 3. A space 5 1s formed by placing between the bars, along their edges, continuous distance pieces or strips 6 6, reaching from end to end of the beam. At their centers the bars are secured Application tiled December 29, 1894:. Serial No. 533.275. (No model.)
together withouta distance piece by rivets 4, whereby they are better supported and braced and form stronger and more solid beams than those heretofore constructed. The article thus formed is strong and inexpensive, and will receive nails the same as a wooden beam, and has all the advantages of a wooden beam with additional strength, as well as being fire proof.
The invention may be applied to beams, joists,`girders, studding, and all like articles for building purposes.
I claim as my invention- In a beam, joist or like structure, the combination of two channeled bars placed back to back, distance pieces 6 located between the bars at their edges, rivets 3 for securing the bars and distance pieces 6 together and rivets 4 for drawing the bars together and securing them at their centers so as to form a truss, the bars being secured at the center in such proX- imity as to form spaces adapted to receive and hold nails, substantially as set forth.
GUSTAV M. VIERNOW.
In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT, STANLEY STONER.
