To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, ROBERT A. OARUTH- ERS and CHARLES P. SAVAGE, of Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Couch and Storage-Chest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved couch, the body and head of which form receptacles for wearing apparel, bed clothes or the like, the parts being so arranged as to permit ready access to the storage compartments when required.

The invention consists of the novel arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa combined couch and storage-chest embodying our invention, the dotted lines indicating one of the positions to which the main section of the top of the couch may be moved. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the article opened up to expose the storage-compartments, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on about the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.

The body A of the couch is made hollow to provide a main storage compartment a, and exteriorly is given any desired ornamentation, and to the body is suitably hinged the head B, which also is hollow to provide an auxiliary storage compartment 19, such compartment I) being provided with a suitable cover b.

The main or seat section 0 is arranged to be swung upward from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to that shown in Fig. 2, audit also is adapted to be run lengthwise of the structure as follows: There is a track rail D provided along the inside of the body A, at the back, on which suitable wheeled carriages E run, the carriages in the instance shown, comprising each a wheel as shown, and a bracket-like frame E which carries the wheel at its upper end, and extends downward behind the track rail D, and is bent at right angles as at e, such lower bent end entering a longitudinal horizontal groove d in the rail D,

the arrangement being such that the carriage is held to the rail and prevented from being disengaged therefrom. The connection between the seat section 0 of the couch and the carriages E in the form shown, is effected by forming an upturned end f on one leaf or butt f of the hinge F and securing said upturned end to the frame E of the carriage. The butt or leaff of the hinge rests on the top edge of the back a, of the body A, and the butt f of each hinge is secured to the seat sec tion 0, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The head B also has secured atone side a rail D, in such a position that when the head is folded down to the open position shown in Fig. 2, the rail D will be in alignment with the rail D of the body A, and the opening d at the back of said rails is continued through the juxtaposed ends of the body and head, the arrangement being such that when the head B is lowered as shown in Fig. 2 the seat section 0 may be run partly onto the auxiliary track D, or run to the opposite end as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, these movements together with the swinging movement of the seat section on its hinges, afiording convenient access to the interior of the body A and the head piece for the packing of clothes therein or removal of the same.

When the parts are assembled as in Fig. 1, the article of furniture has the appearance of an ordinary couch and its functions as a storage chest will be effectively disguised.

On the under side of the seat section 0, near the front edge, rollers O are mounted and are adapted to travel on the edges of the fronts a and b of the body and head piece, said -edges preferably being grooved and rounded to receive such rollers, as shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent 1. A combined chest and couch having a hollow body and the main couch section forming a hinged cover for the hollow body, the said couch section being provided with wheels arranged to run on suitable tracks connected with the hollow body, and adapted when in its closed position to be moved longitudinally in either direction and projected beyond the end of the hollow body, affording access to the interior of the same, substantially as described.

2. In a combined couch and chest, the combin ation with the hollow body having. a longitudinal track rail provided along the inside of the body at the back, of wheeled carriages adapted to run on said rail, means for holding said carriages in engagement with the rail and a seat section hinged to said carriages, and moving therewith substantially as described.

3. In a combined couch and chest, the combination with the hollow body provided with tracks arranged at the front and back of said body, a seat section provided with rollers adapted to run on the front track and having wheeled carriages adapted to run on the rear track, the said section being hinged to the said wheeled carriages, and moving therewith, and means for holding said wheeled carriages in engagement with the rail substantially as described.

4. A combined couch and chest, comprising a body, a head piece hinged at one end to the end of the body, the sides of the head section forming a longitudinal continuation of the sides of the body when swung downward on its hinged connection, and a seat section having sliding connection with the bodyand movable onto the head piece when the latter is swung downward, substantially as described.

5. In a combined couch and chest, the combination with a hollow body having a track rail along the inside of the body at the back, and spaced from the back to form an opening, of a seat section, and wheeled carriages adapted to travel on the rail and hinged to the seat section, the body of each carriage being arranged to travel in the opening between the rail and the back, substantially as described.

6. In a combined couch and chest, the combination of a hollow body havinga track rail along the back, spaced from the back to form an opening, a head piece hinged to the body and provided with a track rail spaced from the adjacent Wall of the head piece, the openings behind the rail of the body and the rail of the head piece being continued through the juxtaposed end walls of said body and head piece, a seat section, and wheeled carriages traveling on the rails and hinged to the seat section, the bodies of each carriage traveling in the openings behind the rails, substantially as described.
