HOLDER FOR SCRAPERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,010, dated April 23, 1895.

A State of Massachusetts, have invented'certainne'w and useful Improvements in Holders for Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, in connection with the drawings making a part of this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a holder fora scraper, such as is used by a carpenter or cabinet maker, for scraping and. smoothing surfaces of wood, &c. The scraper consists of a thin plate of steel, having a sharpened scraping edge preferably formed by cutting the edge of the scraper off at right angles to the side so that the front edge forms the cutter and the depth of the cut is altered by changing the inclination of the blade by moving the top of the plate more or less to the front.

The object of my invention isto provide a holder for the scraper, which holder is of simple construction and operation, and in which the scraper may be quickly secured, and be adjusted, as desired, and may also be held at any desired angle, relatively to the surface upon which the scraper is used.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and operation of my scraper holder, as will be hereinafter fully described, and the nature thereof indicated by the claim. t

In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the holder proper, preferably made of cast metal,

and consists of the base plate 2, against which the scraper, or blade 3 rests, and the two

side pieces

Said plate and side pieces are preferably, made integral. The base plate 2 is preferably strengthened by a tin or ridge 2 on the back side thereof. two

4, 4, is secured the handie5, by screws 6. In connection with the base plate 2 of the holder, upon which the scraper 3 rests, is used the clamping plate 7, to secure the scraper in the holder. The clamping plate '7 extends between the

two thumb screws 8, which extend through threaded holes in the plate 7, at the ends thereof, and outside of the side edges of the scraper 3, as shown in Fig. 1.

A third thumb screw 9 turns through a threaded hole in the central portion of the clamping plate 7, and bears atits inner end on the top surface of the scraper 3, at the middle portion thereof, and serves to hold the middle portion of the scraper edge down on the base plate 2, and prevent the scraper from rattling.

By means of the thumb screws 8, the clamping plate 7 may be readily loosened or removed, to adjust or remove the scraper 3, and

the scraper may be raised or lowered to vary the length of the scraping edge beyond the lower edge of the base plate 2, as desired, and as the edge of the scraper wears from constant use, and from sharpening, the scraper can be moved down in the holder.

Inconnection with the holder 1, above described, I use a handle 10, which is made yoke shaped at one end, and pivotally attached by thumb screws 11, to forwardly projecting ears 4', on the

The handle 10 is grasped by one hand of the user, and the handle 5 by the other hand. By the handle 10, the scraper 3, secured in the holder 1, is drawn or moved along the Between the upper ends of the used as shown in the drawings, and it will also cause the handle to be located more nearly in a direct line above or a little to the front of the scraper, which, in connection with the location of the pivotal point between the blade and the handle in front of the cutting edge, will permit a greater amount of pressure to be applied when the scraper is set for making the greatest out. It will also permit of the handle being thrown forward to such an extent that the scraper can be thrown back so as to enter an angle and commence scraping at the base of a wall or side.

In case it is desired to have a rigid connec tion between the holder 1 and the handle 10, to hold the same in a fixed position relatively to each other, the thumb screws 11 are screwed in to bind the parts together.

The advantages of my holder for scrapers will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art. It is of very simple construction and operation, and the scraper blade may be quickly attached thereto, and adjusted therein as desired, and scraper blades of different widths may be used; and by means of the holder the scraper is rigidly held, and may be easily operated without injury to the user's hands, and may be worked in corners and un dercut surfaces, the.

It will be understood that the shape and details of construction of some of the parts of my scraper holder may be varied somewhat if desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- s In a scraper, the combination, with a base plate provided with a rearwardly extending arm and a forwardly extending perforated car at each end thereof, the front portion of the plate being provided with a strengthening fin or rib, a handle between the rear ends of the side pieces, a clamping plate at the rear of the base plate and between the side pieces, a screw at each end of the plate and a thumb screw at the middle thereof,a scraping blade between the two plates, the bottom of which is at substantially as right angle to the surfaces, and at the rear of the perforations of the ears, the upper end of the blade projecting above the plates and in front of the bandie, and a yokeshaped handle secured to the ears, each end of the yoke being provided with a screw threaded perforation, and a screw through each car into the end of the yoke, whereby the ears may be pivo'tally or rigidly secured to the handle, substantially as set forth.
