Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED ROOFING-CEMENT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,7 16, dated April 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN B. WHEELER, of Waterloo, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Composition for Goverin g Roofs, which I name W heelers Ohampion Roofing, and I declare the following specification to be a full and complete description thereof.
The roofing is thus prepared: Take a cask that will hold thirty-two gallons and over and put into it the following ingredients: twentynine gallons coal-tar, ten pounds gum-shellac, two gallons linseed-oil, four pounds of rosin. The whole having been well boiled together for two or three hours, this forms the liquid composition.
For a drier, mix thoroughly together the following articles: One and a half bushel of good stone-lime well slaked, halfa bushel of plaster-of-paris, six pounds of French yellow, six pounds of Venetian red, six pounds of whiting, six pounds of litharge well heated. This composition must be kept from theair until wanted for use upon the roof, and then to be added to the liquid composition in the proportion of one and a half pint to every gallon thereof.
For the body of the roofing, mix thoroughly together two bushels of water-lime cement, two bushels of stone-plaster, two bushels of anthracite-coal ashes, a bushel sand, and one peek of plaster-of-paris, which is prepared for laying on the roof by mixture with the liquid composition to the thickness of common mortar.
The process of applying the above is as follows: The roof being tightly covered with boards or otherwise, apply a coating of the liquid composition thoroughly over it. Then having mixed together the liquid composition, drier, and body composition into one compound, cover the roof with a good coating of it. Then apply a second coating of the liquid composition, then a second coating of the compound, then a third coating of the liquid composition; then cover the roof thoroughly with a coat of as much silicious sand as will adhere to the composition and the roofing will be complete.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The composition of matter above described for covering roofs of buildings, together with the process of applying the same, as set forth in the above specification.
