H. 0. MAGARRELL.
IRRIGATING DAM.
Patented Apr. 2; 1895.-
wi tnessw NITED STATES PATE T OFFICE HUGH O. MAGARRELIJ, OF TRINIDAD, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES E; BULLEN, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO;
IRRIGATINGDAME SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,883, dated April 2, 1895.
Application filed July 28.1894. Serial No. 518,897- (No model.)
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH O. MAGARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas, State of 0010- rado, have invented a new and useful Irrigating-Dam, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in irrigating ditches, and it has for its object to provide certain simple and effective cut off or dam devices for shutting 06 the Water par tially or wholly as may be desired.
The invention consists in such novel features of construction and peculiar combination of parts, as will hereinafter be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a front view of my improved dam.
In the practical construction, my improved irrigating dam devices are made of sheet metal of different sizes, as the size of different ditches may require.
In the drawing e indicates a main plate formed of a piece of metal of oblong shape, to which are attached adjustable wings cc, which are secured thereto to swing vertically by the bands or arms d-d, connected to one, or both sides, the ends of such arms being loosely riveted to the wings c and the portion 6, so as to act as pivotal connections and allow the wings to be moved vertically and outwardly. The outer edges of the wings 0-0 are tapered or cut off on an incline to enable them to the more securely and readily adjust themselves to the sloping sides of the banks of the ditch. The main plate 6 has a slot a having guides at the sides in which slides a gate b; such construction providing means whereby a small opening can be made in the to main plate to allow some water to pass through the dam if desired.
When setting the several parts in position the main plate e is shoved down across the center of the ditch to the desired depth and 5 the Wings are pressed down in the banks thereof to the proper depth, thereby forming a substantial and effective dam.
By pivotally connecting the wings in the manner shown, the same can be easily forced ;:3 down into the banks, it being obvious that their tapering edges will facilitate such an operation.
What I claim as my invention,- and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved dam comprising a main plate adapted to form a central cut off, and lateral wing like portions connected to such main plate movable vertically and outwardly as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with the main plate e, of the wings c-c and the blades or arms pivotally connected at their ends to the plate 8 and wings c a substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
3. An improved dam consisting of a main plate adapted to form a central rigid cut off, said plate having an opening and a slide gate therefor, wing members having pivotal connections with the main plate whereby they 70 will swing outwardly as they are moved vertically, substantially as show fn and for the purposes described.
H. O. MAGARRELL.
