To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, WILLIAM H. GARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bernardsville, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sash-Frames and Ventilating-Sash; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othro ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference'marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
r 5 My'present invention has reference to improvements in combined ventilators and screens to be used in connection with the window-frame and window sash; and the invention therefore consists in certain novel arrangements and combinations of parts, such as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are views of the window frame and sash, provided with the ventilating screen embodying the principles of my present invention Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line y in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line z, in Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are a front view and a side view respectively of a spring-catch used in connection with the window-frame and sash.

In said drawings, A represents a windowsash frame, in which are arranged to slide up 6 and down therein, the upper window sash a and the lower window sash h. Secured in the upper portion of the window sash is a suitable screen 1), arranged in such amanner, that the edge a of the upper window sash a is in slid- 4 5 ing contact with any part of the face of said screen, whereby said sash can be moved up and down in front of said screen to close or lower the sash from the top, as will be clearly understood.
To limit the downward movement of the up- .ing in said plate 0 is a suitable push-button per sash when lowered, and to prevent the edge a of the frame from being brought below the screen I), I have arranged on one side of the sash-frame a, a spring catch 0, of the construction illustrated more especially in Figs. 5 and 6. Said catch consists essentially of a plate 0, secured by means of suitable screws,
or in any other well-known manner, to the face of the window sash. In a central openor finger knob c on a short arm 0 connected with a spring 0 arranged in a recess in the sash. The end 0 of said spring is in sliding contact with the portion a of the window frame A, so that when the upper sash is lowered to the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4:, said end 0 of the spring 0 will force itself into a notch or recess a in the portion a of the window frame and the upper sash is thus retained in said lowered position, so that the edge a will be brought into contact with the lowest part of the screen I), as shown.
When it is desired to lower the sash as far as possible, as for instance when it is necessary to clean the window, a slight pressure on the button 0 will disengage the end 0 of the spring c from the notch in the window frame and the sash can be lowered or raised at will.
I provide the upper sash a, with a crosspiece a forming with the portions a and a of the sash a frame for a screen (1. The crosspiece a is slotted in the bottom and sliding in suitable ways in the side portions a of the sash, is a suitable sliding panel e provided with a pane of glass 6, which may be of any desirable color. By means of a pull or fingerpiece c said frame e and its glass can be lowered, stops 6 on said frame, which come in contact with the upper edge of the cross-piece a preventing said sliding pane from being pulled out of the frame formed by the several parts of the sash frame. Thus it will be seen that the sash a can be lowered to the distance illustrated in Fig. 1, permitting the pure air to pass into the room through the screen I), 5 but should it be desirable to have more air in the room, the sliding panel e can be lowered and the air also passes through the screen d.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1co 1. In combination,withawindow frame and the upper sash, a ventilating screen, as 1), secured in the upper portion of said frame, a cross-piece a in said sash, a ventilating screen (1, and a sliding panel e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, with a window frame and the upper sash; a ventilating screen, as b, secured in the upper portion of the sash frame, a cross-piece a in said sash, a ventilating screen d, and a sliding panel e, and means connected with said upper sash to regulate the downward movement thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination, with a window frame and the upper sash, a ventilating screen, as b, socured in the upper portion of the sash frame, a cross-piece a in said sash, a ventilating screen 01, and a sliding panel e, and means connected with upper sash to regulate the downward movement thereof, consisting essentially of a spring catch 0 having a finger knob c, and the end a of said catch being adapted to engage with a notch in the Window frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A window sash, as a, having a cross-piece a, a ventilating screen (1 in said sash, and a sliding panel 6 adapted to slide in said crosspiece a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. A window sash, as a,havingacross-piece a, a ventilating screen d, in said sash, and a sliding panel 6 adapted to slide in said crosspiece a, a pull 6 on said frame 6, and stops e all arranged, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
