To @ZZ whom it may concern.: Be it known that I, CREE T. WORK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Umbrella- Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to umbrella holders; and it has for its object to provide a new and useful device of this character, having simple and eflicient means for holding umbrellas so that they canbe secured at any desired elevation or angle, or in any desired direction either when opened or closed, and in this use the holder is especially adapted to provide means for attaching an umbrella to baby carriages and the like.

With these and other Objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the drawingsz-Figure l is a side elevation of an umbrella holder in its applied position to the handle of a baby carriage, showing the umbrella in both its open and folded positions. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the hinge joint of the holder. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig- 4 is a sectional view on the line :2c-x of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the holder clamp for the supporting standard of the holder attachment. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the holder clamp on the line y-y of Fig. 5.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1-2 designate respectively a pair of superposed joint-plates arranged side by side, and adapted to work one against the other in order to provide a hinge joint allowing one of said plates to be turned or rotated on its axis,

While the other of said plates is held stationary. The said joint-plates 1 and 2, are. both provided at diametrically opposite points upon their inner sides with segmental grooves 3, which,when one of said plates is turned, register with each other and thereby form between the registering superposed plates a continuous circular groove that is also truly circular in cross section, and the registering seg-v mental grooves 3, formed in the inner sides of the plates 1 and 2, are adapted to receive therein a round joint-ring 4:. The round jointv ring 4, is round or circular in cross section to snugly register within the grooves 3, formed in the inner meeting sides ot' the joint-plates, and by reason of the arrangement of the grooves 3, of said plates, it will be observed that the central portions of said plates are de-l pressed so as to work dat against eachV other, and the circular inner edges ot' said plates contact and work on each other so as to securely retain the joint-ring in position between said plates, and the central dat depressed portions of the plates 1 and 2, are provided with the aligned screw openings 5, that receive a thumb l screw 6, providing means for the tightening up of the plates Onto the joint ring or the loosening of said plates as may be required for the adjustment of the umbrella.

'One of the joint-plates, designated as 1, is provided at one side with an ostanding integral plate extension 7, having at its outer edge a curved bifurcated clamp jaw 8, having outturned or flared extremities 9, and adjustably iitted at one side cf the plate extension '7, of the joint-plate 1, is a flat clampplate 10, that is also provided at its outerl edge with a curved bifurcated clamp-jaw 8a, opposed and reversely curved to the plate 8, and also provided with ontturned or flared extremities 9a, which, combined with the outturned Or flared extremities 9, of the jaw 8, form guides for introducing the umbrella stick X, into the clamp formed between the opposing duplicate jaws 8 and Si.

The clamp-plate 10 and the plate extension 7, are provided with the aligned screw openings ll, to receive'the thumb screw 12, for tightening and loosening up the movable jaw 8a, carried by the clamp-plate, and said clampplate is provided at its opposite edges with right-angularly disposed guide lugs 13, that engage in the guide notches 14, formed in Opposite edges of the plate extension 7, thereby providing means for properly retaining the clamp plate 10, in position when the same is being tightened and loosened, and preventing said plate from turning on the screw 12, as will be obvious.

The other joint plate 2, isprovid ed with an integral tubular socket portion 15, projected from one side and adapted to receive the upper end of a supporting standard 16, that is IOO detachably secured in the socket 15, of the joint plate 2, by means of a set screw 17, mounted in one side of the tubular socket portion 15, and adapted to impinge on the upper end of the standard 16, and the lower end of said standard 16, is mounted for vertical adjustment in the holder clamp 18, adapted to be detachably secured on the handle 19, of a baby carriage, or other desired point of attachmeut.

The holder clamp 1S, essentially consists of a Xed semi-circular clamp-plate 20, adapted to fit one side of the handle 19, or other round object to which it is secured, and said fixed clamp-plate 20, has projected integrally from one side thereof at its upper and lower edges the offstanding parallel perforate clamp lugs 21, through which loosely passes the standard 16,and said standard is held clamped in its vertically adjusted position by means ot' a clamp set-screw 22, mounted in a screw opening 23, in one eud of one of the lugs 21, and adapted to impinge on the standard 16.

The parallel perforate clamp lugs 21, are provided with longitudinally recessed inner sides 24, that are adapted to loosely receive the upper and lower flanged ends 25, of the movable semi-circular clamp plate 26, that is opposed to and adapted to register with the fixed clamp-plate 20, to provide means for detachably clamping the holder clamp 18, onto a baby carriage handle 19, or other round object. The upper and lower flanges 25, of the plate 26, are provided with the screw openings 27, to receive the fastening screws 28, passed through similar openings near the upper and lower edges of the tixed clamp plate 20.

With the holder attachment positioned as described, and the stick X, of the umbrella clamped tightly between the jaws 8 and 8a, carried by the movable joint plate, it will be obvious that the umbrella can be adj usted to any desired elevation or angle, and when folded, by loosening the thumb screw 6, and turning or rotating the joint plate 1, the closed or folded umbrella may be thrown or turned down out of the way without detaching the same, as clearly illustrated in dotted lines in the drawings, and the several different adjustments for the umbrella and the supporting means therefor will be readily apparent Without further description.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this inveution.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an umbrella holder, the combination with a supporting standard; of a pair of superposed joint plates having registering grooves in their inner sides, and one of said plates carrying a clamp for an umbrella stick, and the other of said plates being provided with a socket to receive the upper end of said standard, a joint-ring fitted between the plates in the grooves thereof, and a thumb screw adjustably connecting said joint-plates to provide for the tightening and loosening thereof on the joint-ring, substantially as set forth.

2. In an umbrella holder, the combination with a su pportin g standard; of a pair of superposed adjustably connected joint plates, one

of said joint-plates being provid ed with a socket portion adapted to detachably receive the upper end of said standard, and the other of said joint-plates being provided with an oistanding integral plate extension having at its outer edge a curved bifurcated clamp jaw, and at opposite edges guide notches, and a movable clamp-plate adjustably fitted at one side of said plate extension and provided at opposite edges with guide lugs engaging in said notches, and at its outer edge with a curved bifurcated clamp jaw opposed to the similar jaw of the plate extension to provide a clamp for an umbrella stick, substantially as set forth.

3. In an umbrella holder, the combination with the supporting standard and the adjustable stick-clamp mounted on the upper end of said standard; of a holder clamp consisting of a fixed semi-circular clamp plate having oifstanding parallel perforated clamp lugs projected integrally from one side thereof at its upper and lower edges, and having longitudinally recessed inner sides, and a movable semi-circular clamp plate detachably secured against the fixed clamp plate and provided with upper and lower flanged ends fitting in the recessed inner sides of said lugs, substantially as set forth.

4. In an umbrella holder, the combination with a supporting standard of a pair of superposedjoint plates provided at diametrically opposite points upon their inner sides with segmental grooves, and with central dat depressed abutting portions having aligned screw openings, one of said joint plates carrying a clamp for an umbrella stick, and the other of said plates being provided with a socket to receive the upper end of said standard, a joint-ring fitted between the plates in the grooves thereof, and a thumb screw engaging in said screw openings, substantially as set forth.
