SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,405, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed April 6. 1894- Serial No. 506,541. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. TEMPLE, a-cilizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Pulls for Water-Closet Flushing-Tanks; and I do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the chain pulls that are usually attached to the flushing tanks of water closets.
The objects of my improvement are to conceal the chain and to prevent it from swinging back and forward thus striking against and defacing the wall or wainscoting of the room in which ,the closet is placed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a sectional view of my device placed in a partition of a house and connected to the flushing tank of the closet. Fig. 2, is a front elevation showing the closet and flushing tank with my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 3, is an enlarged sectional view of the operating part of my device as it will appear when set in a brick wall.

0, is the chain connected to the lever b, extending downward through the pipe 0, and attached to the pull O This pull O is made L shaped and has on the end that projects beyond the wall a suitable knob 02, for grasping with the hand.
D, is a small rectangular iron box or casing set in the wall A.
d, is a silver or nickel plated face plate on the box D, outside of the wall A.
d is a slot in the face plate to allow the pull to work up and down.
The top of the iron box D, is provided with two circular screw threaded openings into one of which the pipe 0, is fitted the other opening being closed by the screw plug a. When the device is placed in a lath and plaster partition the pipe 0, is inserted in the rear opening and extends upward behind the lath'and between the studding of the partition, the screw plug a, being used to stop up the forward opening as shown in Fig. 1. When the device is used in a brick or stone wall the pipe 0, is inserted in the forward opening .of the box and the plug a, in the rear opening, the wall being cut away just enough to allow the pipe 0, to lie back of the plaster. (See Fig. 3.) The pipe 0, serves as a conduit for the chain and when placed in a brick wall the plaster can be laid on and over it withoiit interfering in any manner with the working of said chain. The screw plug a, stops up the opening not in use and thereby prevents any rubbish from falling into the box D.

In a concealed flushingattachment for water closets, the chain G, attached to the Hushing tank lever and passing downward through the pipe 0, concealed in the wall of the room and having on the lower end thereof the L shaped pull C in combination with the box D, placed in the wall and having the opening at the top for the pipe 0, and the screw plug a in a similar opening, all arranged substan- 8 tially as shown and described.
