SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 536,299, dated March 26, 1895.

Holstein, in the county of Ida and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Device for Excluding Dust and Insects and Supplying Fresh Air to a Persons Head and Neck,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of thisinvention is to provide a simple, cheap and durable device adapted to be connected with a persons coat and hat in such a manner as to be readily detachable therefrom and preferably made of transparent material which willexclude dust,insects, the.; and my object is further to provide means whereby a supply of fresh air may be introduced into the interior of the device so as to produce a blast upon the`face and neck of the wearer so that persons operating thrashing machines in hot positions and in other places where dust or insects are liable to interfere with work may be enabled to breathe comfortably, pure fresh air, free from dust and have To this end my invention consists, first, in
details in the construction and arrangement of a device for covering the head and detachably connected with a coat and a hat; and my invention consists further in the arrangement and combination therewith of means for supplying a blast of fresh air to the interior of the device, as hereinafter fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a bottom view of ahat havinga rim fixed to its under side to which the veil may be detachably connected. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of a modified form of device adapted t0 be secured to the under side of a hat by means of rivets. Fig. 3 is a like view showing a modified form of connecting the rim of the hat. Fig. 4 is a top view of a rim having formed on its outer periphery two fianges adapted to receive the veil and also a device fixed to the wearers coat so as to form a detachable connection between the coat and the veil and provided with a hollow perforated tube through which air may be supplied. Fig. is a transverse sectional view through the line X-X of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. Fig. 7 is a perspective Viewv having a broad brim and of any common mafterial.
A2 indicates a wire secured to the under surface of the brim of the hat, and A3 is a cloth strip fixed thereto and provided with a wire A4 in its outer edge.
B indicates a metal rim having two grooves formed in its periphery and of approximately thesame diameter as the wire A2.
- C indicates a veil made of Iiexible material adapted to exclude dust and .insects and also adapted to allow the wearer to see through it, either by being made of some transparent material or having openings in its front covered by glass or other transparent material. At the top of this Veil is provided a rubber band connected therewith and adapted to be .passed over the wire A4 attached to the brim of the hat so as to form a firm connection therewith and uvet be readily detachable therefrom. The lower edge` of this veil C is also provided with a rubber band C2 passed partially around the veil and connected therewith in the same manner as the rubber band at the top.
C3 indicates a wire fixed to the remaining half of the lower edge of the veil and having a handle C4 formed at its front and the loops .C5 at its ends which loops are connected with the ends of the rubber band C2.
D indicates a wire fixed to, and extending parallel with, the flange B at one side thereof, a like wire being fixed to the diametrically opposite side thereof. The `loops C5 are made to overlap this wire and be capable of sliding relative thereto. It will readily be seen that when in practical use and it is desired to open or raise the front of the veil for any purpose whatsoever, this may readily be accomplished without detaching the complete device by pulling forwardly upon the handle C4 and thereby drawing ,the wire C3 away from the IOO groove in the flange B and then elevating the said wire, thus opening the veil at a point directly in alignment with the wearer-s mouth.
To provide means for supplying a draft of fresh air to the interior of the veil when used in extremely hot places I have provided a second rim F bowed inwardly and connected with the inner surface of the rim Bin such a manner that a space is produced between the two rims. Perforations F2 are made at regular intervals throughout the inner surface of this rim and a tube F3 communicates with the interior of the said rims and leads downwardly therefrom where it may be connected with any suitable source of air blast suchfor instance as a fan operated by power derived from thrashing machine or by bellows operated by the wearers coat or a rubber bulb adapted to be placed under the wearer-s arm and be filled with air and said air expelled therefrom'by movement of the wearers arm or in any other suitable or convenient way.
II indicates a flexible band adapted to be secured to a coat or other garment, tightly connected with the same at its lower edge, to completely surround the collar, and a rubber band or its equivalent is connected with the top edge thereof and adapted to engage the lower flange in the rim B to produce a detachable connection therewith. i
In practical operation the band I-l is fixed to a coat or other garment and a rim secured to the under side of a brim of a hat. The veil may then be connected with the rim B and said rim be connected with the top edge of the band H in the manner stated. The coat may then be placed upon the wearer and the rubber band at the top of the veil be passed around the rim formed by the wire A2 and A4 so as to produce a tight connection between the veil and hat. It will now readily be seen that all dust and insects will be effectively excluded from the wearers head and neck and further that no chaff or other like materials will be able to enter the interior of the veil and further that if it is desirable to supply fresh air to the wearer the hose F3 may be connected with any suitable supply of air blast, as before stated.
In Fig. 2 is shown a modified form of rim J to be connected with the under side of a hat which is stamped out of sheet metal and has a groove formed in its central portion to admit the rubber band at the top of the veil and provided with a series of perforations J2 whereby it may be riveted to a hat, and in Fig. 3 a like rim is shown having a plurality of V-shaped cuts to form sharpened projections J3 and adapted to be passed through the hat to rivet the rim thereto.
In Fig. 9 is shown a modified form of the device in which a hat is dispensed with and a rim K adapted to tit on a persons head and having a light open frame work K2 extended upwardly therefrom and a rod K3 projecting vertically from the top of this frame.
N indicates a covering made of some light wearer may turn his head in any direction without turning the entire veil and cover and that the air may freely circulate under the cover. It will be noted further that in thisview the rim having doubled grooves therein is dispensed with and the veil connected directly with the wearers coat.
IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is# ,i
l. An improved device for excluding dust, insects, dac., from a persons head and neck, comprising a band adapted to be fixed to a persons garments to surround the neck, an elastic secured to the top of said band, a metal rim having a concave outer surface adapted to surround a persons neck and have said elastic enter said concave to produce a detachable connection therewith, a veil adapted to surround a persons face and be connected with a hat, a wire bent in the form of a semi-circle attached to the lower edge of the veil and having its ends pivotally con nected with said rim, and an elastic connected with the ends of said wire and adapted to surround the said rim and hold said wire in place, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
2. An improved device for excluding dust, insects, dsc from a persons head and neck, comprising a part adapted to be secured to a persons garment to surround the neck, an elastic in the top of said part, a hollow metal rim having perforations in its inner face and two annular grooves on its outer face, adapted to encircle a persons neck and permit said elastic to enter the lower groove, an air supply pipe communicating with the hollow inte rior of said rim, a veil adapted to envelop a persons head, a wire bent in the form of a semi-circle attached to the lower edge of the veil, means for pivotally and slidingly connectingits ends with the said rim in its upper groove and an elastic attached to the lower end of the veil and having its ends connected with the ends of said wire, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
