SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,113, dated March 19,1895,
Application filed June 16, 1894.
Tc ail whom t may concern-..-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS A. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlisle, in the county of Nicholas and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Harness-Trimming, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to harness trimmings; and it has for its object to provide a new and useful harness trimming designed for the purpose of fastening or securing buckles, rings, and the like, to the harness Without the necessity of employing any stitching.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the draWings:-Figure 1 is a detail in perspective of the breeching and hip straps of a set of harness connected together by the herein-described trimmings. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top View of the crown of the bridle showing the overcheck attachment formed by the herein-described trimming. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View on the line lO--lO of Fig. 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a harness trimming constructed as herein described and such trimming is adapted to be used at the different points on the harness, Where the buckles, rings and the like are fastened, so as to dispense with the ordinary stitching at such points.
The harness trimmingl 1, essentially comprises a base plate 2, that is permanently secured to the harness by means of rivets 3. or other suitable securing devices, and said base plate 2, is provided with a threaded opening 4, adapted to detachably receive the clamping screw 5, that passes through a screw opening 6, formed in the detachable cap plate 7. The detachable cap plate 7, is provided with the side Iianges 8, forming a recessed inner side or pocket that receives the billet or leather wedge portion of the harness that is to be clamped detachably onto that portion to which the base plate 2, is permanently secured. The cap plate 7, may be of any desired shape and ornamentation to provide a serai No. 514,790. ein model.)
neatly finished and attractive set of harness, and not only serves to cover up and protect from the Weather, dto., the rough base plate castings and the leather clamped thereon, but 5 5 also, acts in the capacity of a clamp plate.
The trimming is constructed essentially as described, but is slightly modified at different parts of the harness in order to form parts of the connections as well as a clamp to secure 6o the parts together. As illustrated in Figs. 1,
2, and 3, of the drawings, the fixed base plates 2, are provided at one end with the integral engaging hooks 9, and in the trimming that connects one ofthe hip straps A, to the breeching B, the hook 9, at one end of the base plate has engaged therewith the connecting loop 10,
of a buckle 12, and the entrance opening to the said engaging hook is closed partly by the leather wedge 13, clamped onto the base plate 7o by the cap plate 7, and registering in a notch 14, formed in the upper edge of the said cap plate to receive the said leather wedge. The engaging hook 9, of the base plate of the trimming at one end of the breeching receives 7 5 therein the ring 15, to which the other hip strap is connected as well as the ordinary holdback strap.
The trimming illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, of the drawings is modified to form a portion 8o of an overcheck loop for an ordinary overcheck rein I. In this form of the trimming the base plate 2, is riveted on top of the crown strap I-I, of the bridle and is provided with the opposite integral loop ends or hooks 23, 8 5 that are adapted to receive the opposite portions of the check rein that passes to the front and rear of the trimming, and when the cap plate 7, is clamped in position on the base plate the opposite ends thereof serve to close 9o in the hooks 23, and hold the opposite portions of the rein properly in position. The base plate of said overcheck trimming is also provided with a raised interiorly threaded collar 24, onto which is clamped one end of the buckle strap 25, to which the ordinary winker stay strap is connected.
Having thus described the invention, what is'claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A harness trimming consisting of a metallic base plate adapted to be riveted -flat IOO against one part of a harness, and provided with a threaded opening therein and with an integral ontturned engaging hook at one end adapted to be engaged by a buckle, ring or the like, a flanged cap plate adapted to be detaehably fitted over said base plate and lying close to the entrance opening of said engaging hook to substantially elose sueh entrance opening to prevent the disengagement of the buckle, ring or the like, engaging the same, said cap plate being provided with a screw opening therein, and a clamping screw passed through the screw opening of the eap plate and engaging the threaded opening of the base plate, substantially as set forth.
2. A harness trimming consisting of a Inetallie base plate riveted flat against one part of a harness and provided with a threaded opening and at both ends with integral outturned hooks adapted to be engaged by another part of the harness, a flanged cap plate provided with a screw opening therein and adapted to he detaohably arranged on the base plaie and lying close to said integral hooks to Close the same and prevent the disengagement ofthe part of the harness engaged therein, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS A. IVIIITE.
