Be it known that I, EDMOND TOBTN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Card-Holder and Game-Counter or Tally-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is for the purpose of tallying or counting by numbers singly, or by addition, from one to any higher number.

The object is, first, to count or tally numbers as aforesaid, and afford facilities for such counting by the adjustment of the various parts hereinafter described. I attain these objects by mechanism illustrated in the aecompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a top View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section along the ilne x :t of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end view of the invention after the end covering is removed, showing the external box, the thumb Wheels a a, drums b l) and the axles e e. together with one of the pins used in counting by means of the holes and figures and the location of the apertures through the cover of the box where the numbers on the tape come to view. The parts shown in Fig. 3 are a duplicate of the parts at the other end of the machine. Fig. 4. shows the wheels a a, the drums b Y), axles e e and the tape Wound on said drums.

Upon the top of the box as shown by Fig. l, are arranged figures in sets of one to nine, or higher, with holes in which to insert pins or pegs corresponding to said numbers and between the numbers so arranged other holes in which to insert said pegs, a peg being indicated at the various series of figures by the letter CL The numerals 4 and 7 show the location of figures as they are brought to the surface upon the figured tapes as they are run from one wheel to another upon either side of the machine.

The counting or tallying is intended to be performed by the use of the pins in the holes in the cover shown in Fig. l, corresponding to the numerals in the various series either longitndinal or across the end of the cover.

It is also intended to count with the numerals upon the top singly or in conjunction with the numerals upon the surface of the tape.

The tapes bearing the numerals are passed from one wheel to another upon the drums indicated by b b by means of friction of the iinger upon the surface of the wheel a where it protrudes above the cover of the box.

It is intended to attach at the end of the box of which Fig. l represents the top, a case f, shown in Figs. l and 2, for the reception of cards. The cover shown in Fig. l is fashioned so as to let the revolving Wheels d ct in Fig. 2 pass through at the point t where the finger can come in contact With them in order to revolve them, bringing the numerals on the tape in view as indicated by the numerals Lt and 7 in the quadrilateral spaces shown in Fig. l. These wheels are loose on the axles e and may be revolved independently of each other. The drums b b are fastened securely to the wheels a d and each wheel revolves upon a separate axle, the ends of which are let into the sides of a longitudinal partition of the box as shown in Fig. 3.

An examination of Fig. 2 will show the position of the wheels d, drums axles e, and the course of the tape carrying the figures from one wheel to another through the apertures at c.

The figures and holes for pins upon the cover indicated at Fig. l, and upon the tape passing from one drum to the other, may be increased to any number desired.

The manner of using the machine as indicated singly or in combination by using the numbers on the tape for tens and hundreds, and the figures on the cover for units, andin counting or tallying points made in games, the number of points made may be counted asindicated and the number of gaines kept upon one of the series of figures across the ends.

In counting, to indicate a greater or less number, the wheels are revolved, thus passing the tape from one drum to another, through the slots or apertures at c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a hollow box or case provided with a plurality of holes therein for pegs and slots therein; of a pair of thumb Wheels journaled in said box, and projecting partly through two of said slots; drums rigidly connected to said wheels, and a tape with numerals thereon partly rolled upon each of said drums, and passing through two of said slots and above a portion of said box, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a rectangular box or case, provided with a plurality of holes therein for pegs and slots therein of two axles mounted across said box near the opposite ends thereof; a plurality of thumb wheels each revolubly mounted on one of said axles, and a drum rigidly attached to each of said thumb wheels; a like numberofthumb wheels and drums mounted on the opposite axles, all of the said thumb Wheels partly projecting through slots in the cover of said box; and a plurality of tapes with numerals thereon, connecting said drums and adapted to Wind from one drum to the other or Vice Versa, the said tapes passing through slots in the top of said box and being partly seen above the same, substantially as and for the purposes described.
