To all whom t may concern.:

Be it known that I, FREDRnoK C. MnLcHion, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Knives, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings.

`My invention consists of a folding knife formed of a case, a frame adapted to slide therein, a fastening for said frame, and a.

blade connected with said frame, the operation and construction being hereinafter set forth.

" It also consists in having the blade so connected with the frame that it is self-opening thereon, as hereinafter described.

Figures l and 2 represent perspective views of a knife embodying my invention, the same being respectively in folded and unfolded condition. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of the casingin longitudinal section, and the parts within the casing. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view showing the blade, and the frame to which it is pivoted, the former being partly open. Fig. 6 represents a perspective View partly sectional of a blade and frame, the former being pivoted to the latter at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 5.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a case Within which is the sliding frame B, the latter consisting of the side pieces B', and end plate B2, connecting the same.

C designates a blade which is pivoted to said frame B, and has the spring D connected therewith, and with the axis thereof, whereby said blade opens out or unfolds, as shown in Fig. 5. Pivoted to the plate B2, which is within the case, at the end opposite to the blade, is the lever E, to which is connected the dog F, which latter is fitted to one of the side pieces of the frame B as at G, and has its nose adapted to engage with the shoulder H on the interior of the case, said leverhaving a ring, knob or handle J, on the outer end thereof, it being noticed that the heel-end of the case has an opening K therein, so that said handle may enter the case when the knife is to be unfolded. Connected with the frameisa spring L, which bears against the dog F, so as to force the latter into engagement with the shoulder H.

Within the case, near the front end thereof, is a shoulder M, which is adapted to be engaged by the dog F, when the blade is withdrawn from the case to full extent, thus limiting the withdrawing motion of said blade.

In Fig. 6, the blade has its pivot at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 5, without however producing different results from that shown in said Fig. 5.

The operation is as follows: When the knife is to be unfolded, the lever is moved so as to withdraw the dog from the shoulder H, and the frame B is then pushed partly through the case by pressure on the handle J. The frame is then grasped at the front end of the case, and pulled entirely through the latter until the point of the blade is uncovered, when the spring D becomes operative so that the blade flies out to the operative position shown in dotted lines Fig. 3. The frame may be grasped as a handle and the blade may be used, or the frame is again returned into the case as in Fig. 2, which is more desirable as the heel of the blade is Within said case, thus preventing the blade from turning while the case forms the handle, the advantage of which is evident. When the knife isto beclosed or folded, the frame is drawn out by the blade, and the latter is then folded into the frame, after which the frame and blade-are pushed into the case to full extent, when the handle J protrudes through the case, and the dog F interlocks with the shoulder H thereof, thus retaining the blade Within the case. The in- Ward motion of the frame is limited by shoulders or stops N, on the forward end'of the same, said stops abutting against the case, as shown in Fig. 3. On the inner sides of the frame, near the pivot of the blade, are shoulders P which are adapted to be engaged by the shoulders Q on the blade, thus limiting the opening orunfolding motion of the blade. On the rear end of the plate B2 are lugs R, between which the lever E has its play, and which limit the opposite motions of said lever.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A folding knife having a case, a sliding frame in said case, a blade pivoted to one end of said frame, and means connected with the other end of the frame for locking said frame within the case, said means having a projecting portion Without the case for unlocking theframe, said parts lbeing combined substan` y tially as described.

4. A sliding frame, a self-opening blade connected with said frame, a case containing said frame and blade, and means connected with the inner end of the case for locking said blade with said case, the parts being combined substantially as described.

5. In a folding knife, a casecontaining a pivotal blade, a frame carrying said blade, and a spring-pressed dog connected with said frame, a lever mounted on the frame carrying said dog, and a shoulder on the casing adapted to be engaged by said dog for locking the blade Within the case, the parts being combined substantially as described.

6. A folding knife having acase, a sliding frame with a pivoted blade at one end, alever pivoted to the other end, of the frame, a dog connected with the lever and engaging shoulders on the case, near its rear and front ends and a spring,r connected with the frame and bea'ring against the dog, said parts being combined substantially as described.
