G. KEY. PIN FOR BROOOHBS.

GEORGE KEY, OF RUGELEY, ASSIGNOR TO FREDRIO GRIFFITH, OF BIR- MINGI-IAM, ENGLAND.
PIN FOR BROOCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 535,833, dated March 19, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE KEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of 6 Brook Street, Rugeley, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented an Improved Pin for Brooches and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved pin for brooches and similar articles, and consists in being so bent that it is secured in the catch by lateral pressure. I attain these objects by the meansillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l, is a rear view of the brooch, showing the pin free (or undone) from the catch. Fig. 2, shows the pin as when engaged in the catch. Fig. 3, is a side view showing the coil, &c. Figs. 4 and 5, are respectively detailed plan and side views of the pin. Fig. 6, shows the recess into which the pin rests at its joint end.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
It will be seen that the pin 7, is coiled at 8, in the horizontal plane (or near thereto) so that the spring of the pin lies in the horizontal plane, while the joint 9, permits its vertical movement. Thus the tendency of the pin Application filed December 2'7, 1894-.- Serial No. 533,138. (No model.)
is always to assume the position shown in Fig. 1. Hence when the pin is fastened, as seen in Fig. 2, the pin presses against the part 10, of the catch 11. In fastening the pin is passed through the opening 12, of the catch, in the ordinary manner. In order to prevent eX- cessive side strain upon the joint 9,-by reason of the coil being made in the manner shown, I form a notch 13, in the piece 14, at the front of the joint 9, and further form upon the pin at 15, a corresponding formation or shoulder, which shall fall into and fit in the said notch 13, when the fastening is taking place, and thus the strain is taken or mostly taken by the said notch.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The improved pin for brooches, and similar articles, made and operating as described and shown upon the drawings, having the horizontal coil spring 8, with the shoulder 15, resting in the supporting notch 13, all substantially as set forth and shown.
GEORGE KEY.
Witnesses;
ERNEST W. JONES, CHARLES H. POWELL.
