Description

(No Model.)
B. G. BLANGHARD. DEVICE FOR HOLDING DRAIN TILE IN PLACE.
No. 535,809. Patented Mar. 19, 1895.
I/ i fizz/messes: .fizve7zwi? g a v IZEL'PTM QBMMMA ATENT FFICE BURTON G. BLANOHARD, OF NORTH HERO, VERMONT.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING DRAIN=TILE IN PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,809, dated March 19, 1895.
Application filed January '7, 1895. Serial No. 534,071- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, BURTON O. BLANCHART), a citizen of the United States, residing at North Hero, in the county of Grand Isle and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laying Drain-Tile; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the method of laying ordinary drain tile and the invention has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device for use in connecting the adjoining ends of the tile sections in such a manner as to efiectually prevent the earth or other foreign substances entering the drain in the spaces that intervene between the tile sections.
The invention has for a further object the provision of suitable means whereby the tile sections may be securely held against lateral displacement.
In laying ordinary drain tile it has been the custom to place the sections end to end in the bottom of the ditch which has been provided for their reception, and then to fill up the ditch with earth, using no means whatever to insure the tile sections being held against lateral displacement, which is likely to occur either from the action of the frostin the winter season, and also by the force of the earth which is thrown into the ditch in covering the tiles after they have been placed. A serious annoyance is often occasioned by reason of the clogging of the drain by earth, roots of trees, and other foreign substances entering the drain through open spaces intervening between the ends of the tile sections, and in the present invention it is my aim to obviate the objections mentioned.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a series of drain tile sections, showingthe manner in which the same are laid in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged cross section through one of the tiles, at a point adjacent to the clip covering the joint at the end of the section.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A, designate ordinary sections of drain tiling, which in Fig. 1 of the drawings are shown as arranged end to end, as they are commonly placed in forming a drain.
B, is a strip of heavy sheet metal; preferably galvanized iron, though other suitable material may, if preferred, be employed.
These strips B, which are bent as shown and forced down over the joints at the ends of the tile sections, the ends of the strips being sharpened as shown at 0 enter the earth for a considerable distance and thus serve to securely anchor the sections in place, preventing lateral displacement, while the broad central portion of the strip which fits over the adjoining ends of the sections effectually prevents any foreign substances from entering at the joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
The herein described device for use in anchoring drain-tile against lateral displace--
