So much of the device as has been thus far described constitutes a well-known and approved spring binder, not of my invention.

Heretofore, an order book, or series of books, have been clamped in such a binder, but an index affording ready reference to the pages of the book or books has not been combined therewith. In order to combine a suitable index with the binder and book, I take a number of sheets of paper, bearing the requisite printed matter and stitch them together into an index of a width equal to that of the order book E, or series of books,

which it is to accompany, but of less length. To the binding end of the index 1, I attach by a flexible hinge 2, made of canvas, leather or other suitable material, a rigid strip 3, which causes the index, as a whole to be of a length equal to that of the book E. The rigid strip 3 must be of such Width as will allow the index to open with its leaves lying flat,

as will be understood. The strip 3 is per-,

forated so as to allow it to pass over the standards B B and be clamped or bound with the book E. By preference, I place at each side of the index 1 a sheet at of paper somewhat thicker than that entering into the leaves of the index, which sheets 4 are also perforated so as to adapt them to be slipped over the standards 13 B. The sheets 4 are preferably detached from the index, and have for their object to separate and distinguish it from the book E, and to keep the lastpage of the index from becoming soiled by constant handling.

My invention forms a valuable and convenient adjunct to an order or other book clamped or bound in the approved binder described, and greatly increases its usefulness.

Having described my invention, I claim- The combination with a binder comprising a side having rods or standards attached thereto, a perforated side and a clamping device, of an index composed of leaves, a perforated rigid strip, and a flexible connection between the leaves and said rigid strip, substantially as set forth.
