Be it known that I, MATTHEW ROBERT MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Framing of Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification. L i
The improvement relates to au intermediate part between thehigh and the low pressure cylinders in the class of engines known as tandem-compound. It can be applied to all styles of tandem-compound engines. It is more particularly adapted for the style of engine known as Corliss, because in Oorliss engines the steam is discharged through a wide aperture at or near the lower side of one cylinder, and is received in a corresponding narrow aperture extending across the whole upper side of the other cylinder. scribe the invention as thus applied.
I have discovered that it is practicable to stifdy connect the cylinders and to maintain the connection m.withoutinterfering with the introduction and Vremoval of the large lowpressure piston and low-pressure cylinderhead and that the same device may serve as a steam passage and a steam reservoir.
I provide a single rigid casting of a general rectangular ligure, which I term a distancepiece, having two opposite sides accurately faced, and applied against correspondingly faced surfaces on the two cylinders and firmly bolted thereto. The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.

This part A, a, is a hollow case of cast iron or other suitable material, having an outer and an inner shell connected by a suicient number of cast-in braces A', through which are passed studs B screwed into the metal of the highpressure cylindernextending through the inner face of the chamber and having nuts on their ends so as to form a rigid and tight junction. The provision a, in the center receives the casting M which is nicely fitted to and serves as the stufting box for the highpressure cylinder.
D is a chamber which occupies the ywhole u pper portion of the casting, and is in free communication at one end with the chamber A, which I shall term concentric which brings the steam up from the exhaust of the highpressure cylinder, and at the other end with IOO the induction passage of the low pressure cylinder W.
E is the bottom of my casting a strong, straight portion which may be a single web extending across from the bottom of the chamber A to the low-pressure cylinder. G is the vertical face of my distance piece on the side opposite to the concentric chamber A. It is matched against a correspondingly finished area on the adjacent end of the low-pressure cylinder W. A large circular aperture g is formed in this face of sufficient size to allow the insertion and removal of the head W of the low-pressure cylinder. The studsX which confine the head W to the cylinder W are let partially into' the metal on this face G of my distance-piece and partly into the head W. The thickness of the head and of this portion of the distance-piece should coincide exactly, so that nuts X properly set on the studs will confine both. Further bolts or studs Y secure my distance-piece to the highpressure cylinder M, and corresponding studs or bolts Z outside of the circular seriesX serve to hold my .distance-piece and the lowpressure cylinder W firmly in their correct relations when the nuts X are removed for any repairs.
His the piston-rod, and I and J are stuffingboxes of any ordinary or suitable construction, strongly and tightly secured. The glands in these stuffing-boxes are adjustable by reaching into the hollow interior of the distancepiece.
I provide for staying and strengthening the chamber A by the horizontal hollow braces A through which the holding bolts extend and for staying the chamber D by longitudinal webs D', D', cast in its interior.
The hollow interiors of the chambers Aand D may be formed by coring in the ordinary manner, the ordinary provisions being made for tightly covering the core-print holes.
K K, &:c., are additional pieces of sheet metal or other suitable material, secured to ianges on the surfaces of my chambers. The spaces between these pieces and the casting may contain simply air, or felt, or other suitable non-conductors, to clothe the chambers and prevent the escape of heat.
Modifications maybe made wit-hout departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention. I can vary the height and breadth of the casting, and I can apply a plate or other cover on one side or both sides of the distance-piece to prevent the escape of heat through the circulation of air in the interior, such plates being, one or both, removed when necessary to obtain access.
I claim as my inventionl. A distance-piece for tandem-compound steam-engines, having opposite faces A and G, longitudinal parts D and E connecting them above and below the piston-rod, with a sufficient aperture in the face G and in the interior and side to allow the low-pressure cylinder head W, and the low-pressure piston to be taken out and put in therethrough, as herein specified.
2. A distance-piece for a tandem-compound steam-engine, having opposite faces A and G, longitudinal parts D and E connecting them above and below the piston-rod, with a sufficient aperture in the face G and in the interior and side to allowthe low-pressure piston to be taken out and put in therethrough, and having recesses around the hole in the face G, in combination with the head W of the low-pressure cylinder, having a liange correspondingly recessed, and with studs X set in the low-pressure cylinder, standing in such recesses, and with nuts X pressing partly on the distance-piece and partly on the iiange of the cylinder-head, all arranged to serve as herein specified.
3. In a tandem-compound steam-engine, the combination with the high-pressure cylinder M and low-pressure cylinder W of a distance-piece in a single casting of rectangular figure fitted between and adapted to receive the crushing and rending strains directly as shown, and having a capacious cham` ber A, D, therein leading from the eduction passage m of the high-pressure cylinder up- 93 ward on each side of the extended piston-rod and thence longitudinally to the induction passage w of the low-pressure cylinder arranged substantially as shown so as to per form the triple functions of a distance-piece, a connecting pipe and a steam reservoir between the cylinders, all substantially as herein specified.
