CURTAIN-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,213, dated March 5, 18915.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, NAPOLEON LAvIeNE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and WILLFRED LAv1eNn,a citizen of the United States, residents of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Supports for Ourtains, of which the followingis a specification.

Our invention relates to supports for curtains, and consists in the devices and combinations hereinafter described and claimed; and the object of said invention is to enable such a support with its curtain to be placed in position quickly and to be removed without withdrawal of nails, screws, or other fastenings after the curtain has once been adjusted to said support, and to furnish means of adjusting the curtain with its rollers and brackets properly to said support.

The difficulty of properly arranging curtain rollers and of securing their brackets to window casings is well known. This task becomes necessary at every removal of the tenant, unless as is rarely the case, the landlord supplies the rollers and brackets. It is also desirable to be able at times to remove the curtain and all its appurtenances for the purpose of cleaning the paint off the window casing, or of repainting the said casing. It is much easier to adjust the rollers to the support hereinafter described than to the window` casing, because the adjustment may be made while the support is resting upon a table or bench. When the roller is once adj usted, no further adjustment of the same is necessary.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation of the inside of the upper part of a window and its casing and of our improved support, a curtain, curtain-roller and brackets; Fig. 2, a plan of the parts shown in Fig. l; Figs. 3, 4 and 5, vertical sections, on the line 3-3, 4 4 and 5-5, respectively, in Fig. l.

A represents a window-casing and B a window of the usual construction. The curtainroller O and curtain or shade D are also of any usual construction, in which the curtain is raised and lowered by the rotation of theroller.

The support E is represented in Figs. l to 5 Serial No. 515,470 (No model.)

as a plate of about the combined length of the header a and corner-blocks d of an average window in ordinary dwelling houses. Said support E may be of metal, wood or any suitable material of sufficient stiffness, and is provided with backwardly extending brackets having holes e' (Fig. 2) through which nails, screws or pins may be driven into the top of the header a or downwardly projecting pins e2 may be formed in one piece with said brackets and let into holes a2 formed in the top of said header, as shown in Fig. 3, to secure the support in place. The holes a2 in the top of the header are out of sight when the support is removed.

The support E is provided with horizontal slots c3 provided at theirinner ends with downward enlargements e4 to admit dovetail projections j' cast or otherwise formed on the rear of the roller-supporting brackets F, said brackets F being also provided with other dovetail projections f which reach under the lower edge of the support-plate E, the lower sides of the slots e3 and the lower edge of said support being beveled to form dovetails e5 (Fig. 4) which lit the dovetail spaces between the projections ff of the roller brackets F. Screws f2 turn in the lower projections f of the brackets F against the under side of the support E and prevent any lateral movement of the said brackets F and draw said brackets backward against said support.

Except as above noted, the roller brackets F may be of any usual construction, although said brackets are represented in Figs. l to 5 as carrying a supplementary roller C on which drapery curtains may be supported, the roller C having center-pins c which enter holes f3 in said brackets F, in an obvious manner.

By means of our improvement the curtain and its fixtures may be properly adjusted to the support before the support is placed in position and the support may be attached to and removed from the casing without injury to the latter, and without loss of time.

We claim as our inventionl. The combination of a support-plate, having a beveled lower edge and adapted to be secured to a window-casing, and having horizontal dovetail slots, provided with enlargements, roller-supporting brackets, provided IOO With backWardly-extending projections, having enlargements at their rear ends adapted to enter the enlargements of said slots and to engage said slots, said brackets being provided with other backwardlyextending projections which reach under said supportplate, and screws turning in said last named projections against the lower edge of said support-plate, to draW and retain said brackets against said support-plate and to prevent a lateral movement of the saine, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of a support-plate, provided With backwardly extending brackets, having pins to enter the top of a Window-casing, said plate having also a beveled lower edge and horizontal dovetail slots, provided with enlargements, rollers supportingbrackets, provided With backwardly extending dovetail projections, having enlargements zo adapted to enter the enlargements of said slots, and to engage said slots, said brackets being provided with other backwardly extending projections which reach under said support-plate, and screws turning in said last named projections against the loweredge of said support-plate, to draw and retain said brackets against said support-plate and to prevent a lateral movement 0f the same as and for the purpose specified.
