SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,146, dated March 5, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE P. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Chesterfield and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in churns and especially to the class of body working churns which agitate the cream by a rocking motion, the bodyportion being detachably held to a platform or frame work by means of a rubber band, which is adapted to be attached to the base of the churn by means of a clip, the rocking of the body being limited by the elasticity of the rubber bands, which assists to return the churn to its horizontal position when tilted to one side.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a deflector held within the churn and supported from the cover of the churn, this deflector aiding greatlyin agitating the cream in the process of butter making.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a sectional view of my churn; Fig. 2, a detail of the rubber band, and base of churn; Fig. 3 an enlarged view of the deflector. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of the fastening.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter A represents the body of the churn, and B a suitable frame on which the churn rocks. Attached at their ends to the ends of the side rails (J of the frame B,

are rubber bands D, said bands extending longitudinally over the upper faces of said rails.

These rubber bands have secured thereto at their longitudinal centers clips D" having hooked ends ,E which are adapted to engage corresponding plates E which are carried by the bottom of the churn at its side edges. It will be seen that when the body portion is tilted to one side a short distance, the rubber bands begin to stretch and when under sufficient tension, will serve to return the churn to a horizontal position and the weight of the cream being thrown to the other end of the churn, the body portion tilts in the other direction, and the tension from the other end of the band serves to return the churn to its starting position.

Supported by rods H, H, from the cover I is a deflector J, which when the cover is on the churn, is held a short distance above the floor of the churn, and at each engaging corner of the deflector is a coiled spring K, which normally tend to hold the deflector in a vertical position. When, however, the churn is tilted to one side, the cream following the rounded inner'surface of the body portion reaches a point near the cover, when it falls or breaks over, striking the deflector near its base, the force of the cream causing the de flector to swing back under the pressure, and the cream passes over the upper edge, and part under, thus meeting from both sides, coming together violently causing a greater agitation of the cream. When pressure is removed, the deflector returns, under the stress of the spring to a vertical position ready to receive the cream coming from the opposite end of the churn when the body portion is tilted in the opposite direction, at which movement, the operation of the deflector is repeated, but swinging in the opposite direction.

The clips D are held in engagement with the clips upon the churn body by means of a coiled spring E which connects the inner ends of the clips D, and extends transversely across the frame B, as shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a rocking-churn, the combination with a rectangular frame having elastic bands upon the upper faces of its side rails and attached to the ends thereof, of the rocking churn body having recesses in its bottom and seated upon the elastic bands, the plates fitting over said recesses, and the clips attached to the said bands and adapted to detaohably engage said plates, substantially as shown and described.

2. A deflector for Working body churns consisting of the part J, the wires H, coiled as described, to form springs K, adapted to normally hold the part J in the same plane as that of the wires H, but adapted to be swung backward and forward by the force of the cream, substantially as described.
