Description
P. E. BENTON. LAST,
N0. 534,778. Patented Feb. 26, 1895.
ATEN
FFICE.
FRANCIS E. BENTON, OF STOUGH'ION, MASSACHUSETTS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,778, dated February 26,1 895.
Application filed December 8,1894. Serial No. 531,251- (No model.)
To aZZwhom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANCIS E. BENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to secure the instep block to the body of last so that it can neither rise nor be displaced eX- cept by a peculiar manipulation.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical section, showing the fasteners in their position when the instep block is secured in place on the last body; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the lever-fastener, and Fig. 3 a plan View, to show the angle described.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the last and B the instep block, the former being made with the concave angle a in front and the latter with the front convex angle 1) t0 fit it.
C is a lever fulcrumed on a post D which is driven into a vertical hole 61 in the body of the last. The rear lever-arm c enters an oblique hole I) in the block, said hole beginning at the rear end of a groove b. By
pressing with the thumb or a finger on the fore-arm c of the lever, the arm 0 may be made to enter the hole 12 when the block B is pushed forward until its front convex angle 1) fits into the concave angle a of the last body. This prevents the front from any forward, lateral or upward displacement.
By turning is provided at the end with a head f to pre- 7 vent it from being drawn back through the tube. When the block B is pushed forward into place, the bolt F is thrown up into the block hole 19 while the tube H remains fast in the body-hole a the block B being thus held tightly between the lever (J and the fastener E so that it cannot work backwardly or be displaced laterally at the rear end.
In order to take off the block from the body of the last, the bolt F is pushed down into the tube H and the block B pulled back so as to come oil": and away from the rear arm 0 of the lever.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The lever O fulcrumed on a post D passing vertically into the last body in combination with a last block B having the groove 1) and the rearward oblique hole 73 as and for the purpose described In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses;
FRANCIS E. BENTON.
