(JULLEN.
STOP COCK.
Patented Feb. 26, 1895.
mvenrron I FRANK H. CULLEN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
STO P-COC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,739, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed December 14: 1893- Serial No. 493,635. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK H. CULLEN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Cocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section of my improved cock. Fig. 2 is a detail view of my preferred form of plug and handle. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line III-III of Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar views of modified forms; and Fig. 7 is a top 'plan view of the ring of Fig. 6. My invention relates to the class of plumbers cocks, and is designed to greatly reduce the number of different styles of cocks necessary for different locations, and to produce a cock which may be used either with a lever handle, T-handle, or socket-head for an operating rod, and may be readily secured at either end to either iron or lead pipes.
In the drawings, in which like symbols of reference indicate like parts, 2 represents the body of the cock, having the usual plug valve 3 therein. This valve is provided with a socket-head 4, preferably. having a square socket therein, which receives the squared shank 10 of the handle 5. This handle has a projecting arm 6 beyond the shank, so that if a T-handle is desired, the lever-handle may be severed at. a point distant from the shank, equal to the length of the projecting arm 6, a
suitable groove for the purpose being made,-
if desired, to facilitate the severing of the lever portion. If a rod is used, the shank of the handle is removed and the squared lower end of the rod inserted in the socket of the valve. In Fig. 4: I show a modified form, wherein the arm 6 is made integral with the plug, and the handle has a shank 1O fitting in a socket of the plug. In the form of Fig. 5, both the lever-handle and the arm are provided with separate shanks 10, 11, entering the socket. In Fig. 6 I show another form wherein the arm is provided with a plate 12, having a slot 13 through which the shank 10 of the handle extends into the socket. These forms are all included within the scope of my invention, which lies broadly in the arm 6 and in thesocketed plug.
Each pipe-connecting end of my improved cock consists of a wrench-portion 7, from which extends the exteriorly smooth and cylindrical connection 8, which is interiorly screw-threaded to receive the similarly screwthreaded end of an iron pipe, the cook being screwed upon the pipe bya wrench applied to the portion 7.
If a lead pipe is to be connected to either end, the end of the pipe is scraped to a taper and inserted within the tube-portion 8, and an ordinary wiped joint made at the point of juncture, this joint extending over the cylindrical portion 8. To obviate liability of cracking the tube portion, I slightly enlarge the outer end of the aperture at 9, so that the iron pipe does not engage the screw-threads until it approaches the wrench portion Where the metal is stronger.
, By using a. screw plug in the waste hole 10, the cock may be used with or without a waste.
The advantages of my invention are apparout, since the plumber is not required to carry a large number of different varieties of cooks, the one being easily adapted to any location and With any pipes.
Many changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention, since What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. A cock, having a wrench portion, and an exteriorly smooth tube portion extending therefrom and having inner screw threads; substantially as described.
2. A cock, having a wrench portion, and an inner screw-threaded tube portion extending therefrom, and having a smooth exterior surface the bore of the tube being enlarged at its outer end; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK H. CULLEN.
