FASTENING DEVICE FOR LIDS OF RETORTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,720, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed September 15 1894. Serial No. 523,087- (No model.)
St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and- State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening De-.
vices for Lids of Retorts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the fastening devices for lids of retorts such as are usually used for containing gas, and more especially to that class of devices which will not only permit of a radial swinging to and opening of the lid or door, but will also permit of said lid being moved horizontally or sidewise across the opening of the retort, to scrape away any accumulation of coal, dust, or other deposit on said opening or mouth, and to fasten the lid tightly over the mouth, so as to render it gas tight.
My improvements consist generally in providing such a fastening for the lid of the retort, that the same movement of the device for forcing the lid against the mouth of the retort will also cause said lid to slide over the face of the mouth and then fasten the lid tightly over the same.
My improvements also consist in means whereby the lid maybeimmediately removed or attached to the retort.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation ofa gas retort with the lid or door closed and my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the side of the retort on which the hinge devices are attached. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the side of the retort on which the fastening or locking devices are attached. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the retort, lid, and fastenings, with the lid closed and fastened. Fig. 5 is a detail, partly in section, looking from the left side of Fig. 1.

A is the retort, and B is its lid or door.
The devices for hinging the lid to the retort, are constructed as follows:
C is an ear or lug extending forward from the retort A at one side of its mouth, and D is a double yoke link; the wider portion of which spans the lug O, and is'pivoted to said lug by a bolt a. v
E is a bar extending across the lid B and the mouth of the retort, passing through a guide I) in the lid B, and one end of said bar E being spanned by the smallerportion of the yoke D, to which portion the barE is pivoted by a bolt 0. A small lug d extends out from the lid B into the guide b to form a bearing for the bar E when the lid B is being closed.
F F are two parallel arms extending outward from the side of the lid B, and abutting respectively on the upper and lower surfaces of the large portion of the yoke link D. (See Fig. 2.) The outer end of the arm F is pro: vided with a downwardly extending lip e, which laps over the side or edge of the link D, andfis a small lug which extends downward from the arm F between the linkD and the retort A. When the link D is forced outward, it presses against the lip e and carries the arm F and the lid B with it; and when the link D is forced inward, it presses against the lug f and then carries the arm F and lid B inward also. Said lip e and lug f serve also as guides to retain the linkD in connection with the arm F.
Extending downward from the lower arm D of the link D is a recessed projection d provided with threewalls 1, 2, and 3. The top or horizontal wall 1 is formed of a portion of the lower edge of the arm F, the vertical wall 2 being adjacent to and adapted to abut against the end of the arm F, and the vertical wall 3 being adjacent to the side of the arm F. This recessed extension is-for the purpose of retaining the end of the arm F and the link D in their proper relative positions, and so when said link is swung around to shut the lid, the wall 2 of the recess will bear against the end of the arm F and push it longitudinally at the same time that the link D bears against the lug f of the arm F.
The fastening or looking devices are constructed as follows:
G is an ear extending forward from the opposite side of the retort to the ear 0, and parallel with said ear. The ear G is bifurcated, and between its two prongs or arms is pivoted a cam leverH, the cam g of which is adapted to fit into a recess h in the front of the bar E, said recess being out obliquely in a direction away from the retort A, so that when the cam g is operatively applied, it will not only force the bar E with the lid B against the seat of the mouth of the retort, but will also force said. bar and lid in a horizontal direction across said mouth and away from the hinge side of the retort. The ear G is also provided with an under lip 2' to form a hearing for the under side of the bar E, and to keep it in place when being operated upon by the cam g. On the side of the lever H opposite to the cam g, is an oblique trip projection j, which extends down below the ear G when the lever H is raised (as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3), so that when the barE slides under the ear G, it will strike the projection j, and trip the lever H over into its operative position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3.
The ear G may be cast directly to the retort,but I prefer to fasten it as shown in the drawings, in Which it is detachably secured to a slotted lug K on the side of the retort, a wedge key inserted in the slot of said lug back of the ear G, serving to hold said ear firmly in place.
On the under side of the upper fork of the larger portion of the link D, and extending longitudinally therewith, is a small rounded bead Z, which engages with a corresponding recess m in the upper surface of the lug C (see Figs. 1 and 2), when the lid is closed, the object of said bead and recess being to bring and hold the lid in its proper position whenever it is swung around and about to be fastened.
The operation is as follows: The lid B being closed as shown in the drawings, and the cam lever H being down, the latter is first raised so as to unlock the bar E, sliding it in a direction away from the fastening devices, and pushing the link D against the lip e, and then by the operator pulling said bar toward him thelid swings open and around and with it the link D, swings around on the pivot a, the arms F F also swinging with said lid and link, and the bead Z on the yoke D disengaging itself from the recess m in the lug C. When the lid B is being closed, the free end of the bar E enters between the upper part of the ear G and its lip i, and striking against the trip j, turns over the lever H so that its cam 9 will be outside of the bar E. At the same time the bead Z on the link D will drop into the recess m of the lug 0-, and hold the lid B and its bar E steady and in their proper positions for being fastened. The operator then bears down on the arm of the lever H, when its cam g, which has dropped into the recess h, of the bar E, will not only press said bar inward and the lid B against its seat, but, by reason of the outward incline of said recess h, the cam g will force said bar in a direction toward the fastening devices, and at the same time will swing the link D against the lugf, and slide the lid B (by means of the arm F) across its seat, so as to scrape away any coal, dust, or other deposit from the seat, and thus locking the lid gas tight upon the seat.
From the above it will be seen that after the lid is swung shut, one movement only of the operator serves not only to press the lid against its seat, but also to slide the lid over the same tightly, to clear away any deposits which might be thereon. The above is a most desirable object to attain, besides having the fastenings of simple construction and readily removable, that they may be replaced by others in a moment in case of need.
The entire lid, with hinge and bar can all be removed, by simply removing the pivoted bolt (1; and the locking mechanism can also be removed as readily, by removing the key 70.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a retort mouthpiece aud its lid, of a bar extending across said lid, a yoke pivoted to said bar and also pivoted at one end of the mouth-piece, the lid being supported entirely by the yoke independently of any support from the bar, by means of its arms F. F. engaging with the yoke, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a retort mouthpiece and its lid, of a bar extending across said lid, a yoke pivoted to said bar and also pivoted at one end of the mouth-piece, the lid being supported entirely by the yoke independently of any support from the bar by means of the arms F. F. engaging with the yoke, and the bar being provided at its looking end with an oblique recess serving in conjunction with the lever cam g. in the act of locking, also to slide the bar and lid as set forth.
3. In combination with a retort and its lid, a bar extending across said lid, a yoke pivoted to said bar and also pivoted to the retort at one side of its mouth, a cam pivoted to the retort on the side opposite the yoke and adapted to swing in a direction at right angles to the bar and to engage with an oblique outwardly extending recess in the front of the bar, and whereby one motion of said cam serves not only to press the lid upon its seat, but also to slide said bar and the lid longitudinally across said mouth and in a direction away from the hinge side of the retort, all substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with a retort and its lid, a bar extending across said lid and passing through a guide thereon, a link pivoted to said bar and also pivoted or hinged to the retort at one side of its mouth, an arm secured to the lid extending outward over said link and provided with a lug extending between said arm and link, whereby the lid may be swung upon and away from its seat, and also slid upon the same toward the fastening de vices, all as set forth. v
5. In combination with a retort and its lid, a bar extending across said 'lid and passing through a guide thereon, a link pivoted tosaid bar, and also pivoted or hinged to the retort at one side of its month, an arm secured to the lid extending outward over said link, and provided with a lip extending beyond said link, whereby the lid may be swung upon and away from its seat, and also slid in a direction awayfrom the fastening devices, all as set forth.
6. In combination with a retort and its lid, a bar extending across said lid and passing through a guide thereon, the double yoke link D pivoted or hinged to the retort at one side of its mouth, and also pivoted to said bar, an arm secured to the lid and extending outward from the same over the link D, and provided with a lug extending between thelid and said link, all as set forth.
7. In combination with a retort and its lid, 2. bar extending across said lid and passing through a guide thereon, the double yoke link D pivoted or hinged to the retort at one side of its mouth, and also pivoted to said bar, the two arms F and F extending over and under the link D respectively, and the arm F provided with the lip e and lug f, all as set forth.
8. In combination with a retort and its lid, a bar extending across said lid, a yoke pivoted to said bar, and also pivoted to the retort at one end of its mouth and having the oblique recess in its front, and the cam lever H. pivoted to the retort on the side opposite the hinge and adapted to engage with the oblique recess in the bar, said cam lever serving not only to force the lid against the mouth of the retort, but also to force the barand the lid in a direction across said mouth and away from the hinge side of the retort.
9. In combination with the cross bar of the retort lid, the cam lever H pivoted to an ear on the retort, and having the cam gand trip j, all combined and adapted to operate as set forth.
10. In combination with the retort mouthpiece, its lug O, and its lid, a bar extending across said lid, a yoke pivoted to said bar and also pivoted to the retort mouth piece at one side of its mouth, the side of said yoke which rests upon the lug 0. being provided with the bead l. for engaging with a corresponding recess m. in the top of the lug when the lid is shut, all as and for the purposes set forth.
