Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. NORTHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Caps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a cap designed to fit over the top of a bottle and hold the corkin place. It is particularly adapted for use in connection with bottles containing aerated liquids, or liquids charged with gas,where there is a pressure from the inside tending to force the cork from the bottle, and can-be used with either a full sized cork in the neck of the bottle or with a thin cork resting partly on the top of the bottle and known in this art as a seal.

The object of my invention is to provide a bottle cap which will be at once economical in construction and efficient in service, and which, while being easily applied, may be removed without the use ofanyotherinstrument than the ordinary penknife.

The best embodiment of my invention at present known to me is that shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents my improved cap in position on vthe neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 represents the cap with the tying-cord removed. Fig. 3 represents that portion of the cap shown in Fig. 2, with thelegs spread out into a plane parallel to the top of the cap for convenience of illustration. Fig. trepresents a modified forni of the cap in position upon a bottle, and Fig. 5 represents the same constructionwith the legs spread out. for convenience in illustration.

Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in each figure.

The cap is composed of a capping portion which fits over the top of a bottle and a tyingcord which serves to hold the same in place. The capping portion, which can be stamped out of a single piece of metal, consists of a plate or (shown in the drawings as somewhat dished or recessed at 5) having a plurality of legs a which are bent down into such position that the capping portion will closely fit over the top of the bottle. The legs extend some distance down the sides of the head 11 of the bottle and their lower extremities are held tightly against the head and under a shoulder 6, by the tying-cord, f. This tying-cord, which is a piece of twine or ribbon or other band of flexible and compressible material,

makes somewhat more than one full turn around the bottle neck, lying over the legs somewhat above their lower ends. These ends of the legs are bent back upon the cord, as shown at g, and tightly claspit. Since the tying cord makes more than one complete oncircling of the neck, the necessity of a knot is obviated, as the ends of the legs, being bent back upon the cord, become embedded therein and securely hold it and prevent it from slipping.

The shoulder e, referred to, may be the ordinary shoulder at the base of the head as shown in Fig. 1,01 it may be made by agroove in the head as shown in Fig. 4. The construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is designed for use in connection with a bottle having the former shoulder. In this construction I prefer to make the feet h of the legs flaring and bifurcated, as shown. Figs. 4 and 5 represent a construction adapted to be used with the latter shoulder. Although I have shown in the drawings the construction in Fig. 1 as used in connection with afull sized cork, and that in Fig. 4 as used with a seal, it is evident that either construction may be used with either form of cork.

To distinguish this application from another which 1 have made on the same subject matter, I designate this one Case B.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a bottle-neck having a shoulderthereon, of a bottle cap consisting of a-plate having a plurality of legs projecting therefrom, and a removable, flexible, compressible cord which encircles said neck beneath said shoulder and over said legs and holds the legs against said shoulder, said cord making more than one complete encircling of the neck and passing twice across one or more of said legs, the extremity of the legs beneath said cord being bent back upon the cord and compressing it to an extent sufficient to prevent it from slipping, all constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the pn rpose specified.
