UNITED v STATES PATENT Fries.
QUENTIN W. BOOTH, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TURNING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 534,420, dated February 19, 1895.
Application filed April 15, 1893. Serial No. 470,480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, QUENTIN W. BoorH, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turning-Machines, of which the following is a specification. l
The present invention consists in improvelments upon the class of beading machines which is represented in Letters Patent No. 495,776, granted to me April'lS, 1893. AThese improvements consist of improved meansfor imparting the compound movement to the irons or blades, of an improved pivotal connection for the irons or blades, and of improved means for adjusting the relative positions of the operating ends of the irons or blades.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1, is a front view and Fig. 2, a side view partly broken away, illustrating the improvements. Fig. 3, is a detail view of a modi- `iied means for adjusting the relative positions the machine is to turn, stretch and spread theA scallops of the button-nies of ladies shoes.
A is a support, standard or base, on which all the other parts are mounted.
B, O, are two turning irons or blades each of which has a combined vertical and lateralv movement in the plane of its blade, the rela` tive arrangement and operation of the two irons or blades being such that their working edges move to and from each other in similar curves; and when acting upon the scallops of button-nies or upon analogous seams the irons or blades operate as a spreader for spreading or stretching Ythe same.
The drive-shaft. H, provided wlth a drivepulley a extends parallel with'the plane and paths of the irons B and C, instead of at rightangles thereto, which is of advantage both in rendering the machine more compact, and in enabling the vdrive belt to be connected to the 'pulley a without crossing or with fewer guide' pulleys. Motion is communicated from the shaft H to the irons by a single cam-block I, which is carried by and rotates with the shaft and which is located between the feet of the two irons B, O. Thek cam-block has two cam faces m n (see Fig. l) on its periphery for imparting to the respective irons'vertical or 1ongitudinal movements, and cam faces o p on its sides for imparting the lateral movements to the respective irons. The feet of the irons B, C, have toes j respectively, which co-operate with the cam-faces m n respectively, and have also adjustable h eels la Z which co-operate with the cam-faceso p respectively. The adjustable heelsare composed of screws which enable them to be laterally adjustable both to take up wear and to vary the relative positions (and hence the extent of movement) of lthe operating or head ends of the irons. The heels kl are maintained in contact with the cam faces o p by an extension spring J, which is connected at opposite ends to the irons B, C, respectively. The toes t j are maintained /in contact with the cam faces m n by compressson springs K which are interposed between the pivot blocks L andthe bottoms of slots c in the ironsB, C. Each iron is slid- .ingly pivoted on a pivot-block'L, and has a rectangular slot e which embraces the block L and allows thelongitudinal movement of the iron. Each pivot-block turns independently on a stud M fastened Yto the support A.
This stud maybe madeV vertically adjustable by slottin-g the standard A, as in my said Patent No. 495,776. A guard-plate N (see Fig.
2,-it is omitted in l) covers the slots and y ling a longitudinal movement and a lateral movement, in combination with a rotating cam having a peripheral cam face which gives the IOO longitudinal movement and a cam face on its side which gives the lateral movement, substantially as set forth.
2. In a turning machine two turning irons each havinga lateral and a longitudinal movement, in combination with a shaft, and a cam thereon, said cam having peripheral cam faces which give the longitudinal movements and side cam faces which give the lateral movements, substantially as set forth.
3. In a turning machine the turning iron having an adjustable heel, substantially as set forth.
4. In a turning machine the turning iron having an adjustable rotatable heel with faces at different distances from the center of rotation, substantially as set forth.
5. In a turning machine the cam, and the two irons having adjustable heels, in combination with the spring between the two irons for maintaining their adjustable heels in con tact with the side cam faces of said cam, substantially as set forth.
6. In a turning machine a pivot, and an iron having a slot embracing said pivot, in combination with a cam, and a spring between said pivot and the bottom of said slot for maintaining said iron in (3o-operation with said cam, substantially as set forth.
7. In a turning machine, a turning pivotblock having parallel sides, in combination with an iron having a slot with parallel sides embracing said pivot-block, and means for QUENTIN W'. BOOTH.
