To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEROY CLOUGH, spinner and manufacturer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Grove Mills, Keighley, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Facilitating Doffing Bobbins in Spinning, Twisting, Doubling, and Similar operation upon single bobbins, and to securev increase of speed, uniformity and economy in the operation. The wire boards or guide `boards e are hinged at e and can all be'turned up out of the way at once as may be required during the operation of dofting, by means of a fiat bar e3, running the whole length of the Wire boards which is hinged to the same bracket e2 as the wire boards. In the operation of the apparatus for performance of the doffing the fliers are all brought into line by suitable means such as follows:-On an aXisf placed in bearings f across the frame and 6o actuated by a handle at the end is aseries of .short arms or parts f2 which lie out of the way until dong is to be effected; when they are turned up each against one arm of a flier to prevent its rotation. See position shown by broken lines Fig. 2.
At the lower part ofeach spindle g is provided a gear wheel g', each of which at the proper time can be engaged by one of a series of worm wheels g2, mounted on a horizon- 7o tal shaft g5, carried by bearings from the framing and actuated from the end by a ,suitable handwheel g4 Fig. la. The operation of the vworm wheels g2 is to'unwind the spindles g from the screw-threads of the fliers g5. When the worm wheels g2 have been pulled out of gear, seey Fig. 18 a latch g, bearing upon the collar 97, of the shaft g3,holds said worm wheels free from the gear wheels g', and the same -latch g6 serves to hold these 8o wheels in gear when moved into the position shown in Fig. 19.
The fliers QI5 having been nscrewed the Stoppers f2 areturned away and the fliers, being free of the spindle screw threads, are now engaged and lifted by a series of arms,
h, h', (Figs. 5 and 6) the upper arms hhavingl holes h2 (see Fig. 12) for receiving the necks of the fliers, and the lower arms h (see Fig. 11) being shaped to pass the spindle so as to 9o come underneath the shoulders of the fliers. The upper arms h are carried by fiat bars h3 extending along the front ofY the machine .and supported on the axis h4 (Fig. which rests upon bearings in brackets or sliding supports b at the ends of and at suitable distances along the receptacle b'.- Intermediate supporting brackets d, Fig. 5 are also placed at suitable distances apart along the sliding receptacle b. The axis of the bar h3 also carroo ries bearings h7 for the axis h6 of another at bar h5 which carries the lower arms hf. The
bar h5 can partly rotate on its axis hf. The bars h3, h5 are provided with handles hq', hg respectively at one end of the machine to enable the arms h, h being turned as required the positions being maintained by suitable catches hw 71.11. g
In front of the frame suitably supported on vertical guides a, are supports b for a receptacle b for the filled bobbins, and this support, with the receptacle, is raised and lowered by suitable chains b2 passing over pulleys b3 upon a rotatory shaft b, carried by suitable arms A from the framing A. At one end of the frame, the shaft b4 has mounted on it a worm wheel c which engages with the worm c upon the spindle c2 carried by the member c3 upon the arm A. At the lower end of the spindle c2 is provided beveled gear wheels ci, cL1 operated by hand wheel c5 mounted on the framing. By these means the chains h2 may be wound upon or unwound from the pulleys b3, thus raising or lowering the receptacle b' with its attached parts.
The supports Z) are provided with antifriction rollers b5, b5, bearing upon the vertical guides d. The length of the chains b2 may be adjusted by means ot' suitable bolts band nuts 197.
The receptacle b for the filled bobbins carries a blade or part Z)s having a series of notches or slits into which the thread or yarn is laid by the fall of its bobbin into the reoeptacle. Adjacent to this part 128 is another strip or blade b" provided with a series of cutters 1110,12, and having a handle bu at one end of the receptacle, the whole series of threads across the traine being simultaneously severed thereby. The movement of the blade b is controlled by suitable stops, and anti-fric tion rollers b12 are provided at suitable distanees apart, see Fig. 14 the handle D being removed in this figure for the sake of clearness.
The litter plate or bar i is caused to traverse by the ordinary means during spinning but for doffing is carried high by means of special apparatus, shown in Fig. 2l. A rotating azzisj3 is provided and is operated by a hand wheelj4 at the end of the machine as shown in Fig. l. Upon the axisj3 is a pulley i2 operating a chain or bandj passing around a guiding pulley j'? carried by a support js from the framing A. The lower end of this chain j is connected to the ordinary sliding barjf by lugsjm. The sliding motion given to the barjJ by these parts is transmitted to the lifter bar in the usual way, when the apparatus commonly known as Scaifes lifter motion is employed. A pulley mounted on the same axis js carries a counter weight for balancing the weight of the litter bar, dac., and a ratchet wheel]l5 and catches or pawls j (see Fig. 1) serve to hold the parts in position.
For knocking oft the full bobbins a flat bar 7c is hinged at suitable intervals to the bar e3 which. lifts all the wire boards at once. When the wire boards are turned up and the full bobbins have been lifted to a suitable height up the spindles, the bar k is swung forward on its hinges 7o and strikes all the full bobbins oft the lifter bar t' into the receptacle. The fresh supply of empty bobbins to replace these full bobbins is arranged (as shown by dotted lines Fig. 5) upon a series of fingers d carried by fiat bars d2 along the front of the spinning frame. These bars are provided at suitable distances with axes d, see also Fig. 10, which are carried by bearings in the supports b and d from the sliding receptacle h. At the appropriate time these fingers are overturned, by means of a handle d4, Figs. l and 13 into the full line position Fig. 5 thereby capsizing the empty bobbins onto the ends of the spindles.
When a series of bobbins have become full the operation of dofiing may be performed as follows: The machine having been stopped, the sliding support i) with its attached parts, is lowered by the means described until the pointeror finger a reaches a suitably marked position which may be indicated on the vertical guides a by the word Doit. This brings the flier lifters 7L h between the front rollers and the tops of the spindles. The knife hi is then pulled outand the wire boards e are raised by a handle at one end of the frame. The flier Stoppers or parts f2 are raised up against the fliers, and the worm wheels g2 pushed into gear which being turned in the direction op'posite to spinning, cause the fliers to be unsorewed free of the screw threads of the spindles. The flier Stoppers f2 may be lowered again. The axis carrying upper arms is then turned into such position that the holes h2 are exactly above the tops oi' the fliers. The receptacle is then lowered until the boss of flier enters the hole in the upper arm. The axis carrying lower arms is now turned by means of its handle 7L bringing up these lower arms into position underneath the shoulders ot' tliers thereby clasping fliers between top and bottom arms as shown in Fig. 5. The sliding motion is reversed and the parts lifted carrying the fliers to a height at which the full bobbin can come oft and the empty bobbin go on in its place. At the same time as these parts are raised the lifter plate with full bobbins is raised, until said bobbins are nearly clear of the spindles, by means of the hand wheels i4 and apparatus described with respect to Fig. 21. The bobbins are then knocked over in the manner already described. The lifter plate is then lowered and the fingers carrying the empty bobbins are overturned so that the bobbins slide down on to the spindles. The fingers are then returned to the dotted position Fig. 5. The receptacle b and its attachments are then lowered until the fliers are on to the tops of the spindles when the lower arm h is released by turning it downward. Then the receptacle is raised until the upper arm h is sufficiently clear of the fliers to allow it to be turned down out of the way. After lowering IOO IIO
the wire boards, the iiers arerscrewed on to the spindles by the latter being turned in the direction of spinning by means of the worm wheels g2 which at the same time wind upon the empty bobbins a few turns of yarn'or thread. The severance of the threads then takes place'the worm Wheels are pulled out of gear, the receptacle b and its attachments are taken up out of the way and the machine is restarted. By these means I avoid taking up the space of the frame near the ordinary running parts of th'evframe. t
The receptacle for full bobbins which rises and falls with the other parts referred to, is only allowed to remain down while it is actually in use it going upfout f the way, bythe gearing being operated as at other times.
Having now particularly described and asccrtained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is tobe performed, I declare that what I claim isl. The combination with the framing A and bracket e, of the guide boards e and fiat` bar e3 hinged to said bracket, and the bar la hinged to the bar e3, whereby the guide boards may all be turned up out of the way at once and the bar k be swung forward on its hinges,
to strike all the full bobbins 0E from alifter bar and into a receptacle, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination of the vertically movable receptacle b', the lifter bar z', the hinged and upwardly turning guide boards e, the
hinged bar e3 movable with said guide boards, and the bar 7o hinged to the bar e3 and adapted to be swung forward to strike the free bobbins off from the lifter bar and into the receptacle, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the axis f provided with a handle and havinga series of stopper arms j"2 that are normally out of the way until doffing is to be elected, the fliers g5, the spindles g each having at Yits upper end a screw threaded connection with a iiier and provided at its lower end with a gear g', the shaft g3 actuated by hand wheel g4 and provided with worm wheels g2 adapted t0 be engaged with and disengaged from the gears on said spindles, and alatch gadapted to engage a collar 97 on the shaft g3 to lock the worm wheels in gear with or free from the gears on the spindles, substantially as described.
4. The combination Awith the iers g5, of the series of arms h and h', the upper arms h being provided with holes h2 to receive the necks of the Iiiers and the lower arms h being adapted to pass around the spindles and engage beneath the shoulders of the iiiers, the bars h3, h5 from which said upper and lower arms are supported andprovidedwith handles h8 hf* by which the said arms may be turned, and vertically sliding supports for said bars, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the vertically -movable receptacle b provided with means for holding and severing the threads or yarn, the lifter plate or bar i and its operating mechanism, the knocking 0E bar lo and the hinged guide boards e, substantially as described.
6. The combination with the vertically sliding receptacle b and its supports b d, of the ilat bars cl2 provided with series of fingers d and the handle d4 for overturning said ngers, substantially as described.
