SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,125, dated February 12, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES AUGUs'rUs STRAUB and HENRY FRANK STRAUB, of Rouseville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new .and Improved Fced-Water Regulator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of the invention is to provide anew and improved feed. water regulator, which is simple and durable in construction, very effective and uniform in operation, and Works without the jerks and jars so frequently experienced with feed Water regulators as heretofore constructed.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement; and Fig. 2' is a like view of the improvement differently arranged. 1
The improved feed water regulator is supported either on or in close proximity to the boiler and is provided with an expansion pipe A, inclined in such a manner that its lower end is below low water mark, and its upper end somewhat above high water mark, as indicated in the drawings. The lower end of the expansion pipe A is connected by a pipe 0, with the water compartment of the boiler, and in the said pipe is arranged a valve 0', for controlling the flow of the water through the pipe to the boiler. The upper end of the expansion pipe A is connected by a small pipe D with the steam compartment of the boiler, preferably at the steam dome, as is shown in the drawings, the said pipe containing a valve D for cutting off the steam whenever deemed necessary.
The lower end of the expansion pipe A is supported on a pipe E which extends parallel to the pipe A and is connected at its upper end with asteam pipe G, (see Figure 1,) connected by the branch pipe G with the steam compartment of the boiler. When the apparatus is in an operative condition, the pipe E is closed at its end by any suitable means.

In the pipe G below the branch pipe G is arranged a valve H, having its valve stem H yieldingly connected with the free end of i a lever I, fulcrumed on thepipe E, and pivotally connected with the upper end of the expansion pipe A. A saddle F secured to the pipes E and'G, serves as aguide for thelever I. F are brackets for securing the pipe E to the boiler. The lower end G of the pipe G formsthe steam inlet pipe for a pump G for feeding water to the boiler by its discharge pipe G the said steam pump deriving its water supply by a suction pipe G from a tank G as shown in the said Fig. 1.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the steam pump G is directly connected with the boiler by the pipe G and the pipe G is connected above the valve H with the water supply tank'Gr by a pipe G so that in this case the water supply to the pump G is regulated instead of the stean1 for working the pump, as shown in Fig. 1. i
From theexpansion pipe A extend, preferably at right angles and upward, the branch pipes J, leading to a condenser pipe K, connected at its lower end with the water pipe C, the upper end of the condenser pipe being provided with an air cock K to permit the escape of air or steam of low temperature. Each of the branch pipes J is provided with a pet cock J, and the upper ends of the branch pipes extend about half way into the condenser pipe K, so that any steam condensing in the said pipe K does not flow back through the branch pipes J into the expansion pipe A, but flows down the pipe K into the pipe 0.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the Water in the pipeA will rise and fall with the water in the boiler B, as the upper end of the said expansion pipe is connected with the steam compartment of the boiler. It will further be seen that the change in heat from water to that from live steam causes an expansion of the pipe A, and the change in heat from live steam to that from water causes a contraction thereof, the expansion and contraction of the pipe A causing a swinging of the lever I, so that the valve is either closed or opened, as the case may be, to admit more or less steam or more or less water to the pump G or to shut oil the steam or water completely. The valve I-I thus regulates the motion of the pump and consequently the amount of feed water passing to the boiler.
In order to relieve the expansion pipe A of steam and to keep said pipe constantly charged with steam directly from the boiler, Weprovidethe branch pipes J, through which the steam can pass from the expansion pipe into the condenser pipe K, so that the expansion pipe A is heated more uniformly, according to the temperature of the steam and water in the boiler.
Having thus fully described ourinvention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Afeed water regulator comprising an expansion pipe connected to the boiler, branch pipes through which steam can escape from the said expansion pipe, and .mechanism for controlling the supply of feed water by the movement of the expansion pipe, substantially as described.
2. A feed Water regulator comprising an expansion pipe inclined relative to the boiler, and connected at its lower end with the water compartment and at its upper end with the steam compartment, a lever connected with the expansion pipe and controlling a valve for regulating the admission of the feed Water to the boiler, and a condenserpipe connected by branch pipes with the said expansion pipe, substantially as shown and described.
3. Afeed water regulator comprising an expansion pipe inclined relative to the boiler, and connected at its lower end with the water compartment and at its upper end with the steam compartment, a lever connected with the expansion pipe and controlling a valve for regulating the ad mission of the feed water to the boiler, branch pipes extending upward from the said expansion pipe, and each provided with a pet cock, and a condenser pipe connected with the feed pipe for the boiler, the said branch pipes extending a distance into the said condenser pipe, substantially shown and described.
