Be it known that we, GEORGE D. AOKER- MANN and MORITZ FRHLIOH, citizens of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State Of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' enabled to be rented out if desired for a com paratively small sum.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a base or aspider-frame composed of spreading legs and provided lwith a screw threaded socket-piece a which receives the correspondingly screw-threaded lower end of the standard B which is thereby connected to and mounted on the base. The standard B is of tubular or hollow form and is open at its upper end so as to receive an adjustable post C, said post being provided at its lower end with a laterally'projecting handle D, the shank of whichextends througha longitudinal slot b,

dle is located at either the upper or the lower end of the slot permit the handle to be turned so as to support the post at .its upper and lower points if so desired. For the purpose of adjusting the post to the desired height, the standard B' is provided with a screwthreaded side opening to receive a set-screw D which, when loosened permits the adjustment of the post C by means of the handle D and which when tightened, engages the post and supports the same at the desired adjusted elevation. A plate E, see Fig. 3, of rectangular or any other suitable shape is provided with a screw-threaded socket-piece e which receives the correspondingly screw-threaded upper end b2 of the post C. To this plate E are hinged near its outer edge at f,f, so as to radiate therefrom, a number of ribs F which are adapted to fold upwardly and downwardly IOO against the post. To these ribs is securedin any suitable manner an umbrella-covering or awning G, the edges surrounding the central opening of which are securely clamped and held between the plate E and a head I-I of hollow or case-like form. Said head H is pref erably of rectangular form as shown, and is composed of a base-plate h which is screwed or riveted to the plate E and is provided with zo upwardly-projecting side flanges hX on all four sides which are spaced a suitable distance apart at the angles of the head, so as to provide vertical openings h2. To the outer sides of the flanges hx are riveted or screwed i 5 upwardly-projecting side-plates h3 which at their upper edges are formed with inwardly extending flanges h4 onto which is fastened by screws or rivets the top-plate h5 of the head or casing.

Mounted in bearings I, I', located in the angles formed between the side-plates 71.3 and arranged respectively at opposite sides of the openings h2 are a number of pulleys .I which radiate from the center of the head and proz 5 ject a slight distance beyond the same;

Guided over these pulleys are pull-cords K which at their outer ends are firmly fastened to the outer ends of the ribs F of the folding umbrella-frame, said pull-cords passing 3o through a central guide-opening It0 in the base-plate of the head and through an opening e in the plate E, the lower ends of said pull-cords being thereby led out alongside of the post C and extending downwardly a suit- 3 5 able distance so as to be within reach. To the lower ends of the pull-cords are applied rings or loops 7c which are adapted to engage over a pin m which projects laterally from an upwardly-extending lug m on the shank of 4o the operating handle D.

For the purpose of creating a certain degree of friction or tension upon the pull-cords, the under side of the top-plate h5 of the head I-I has secured thereto radiating spring fingers h corresponding in number to the pulleys and engaging with a slight pressure upon the pull-cords. For the purpose of setting off the device and imparting a finish thereto, the same is crowned by an ornamental piece L 5o which is secured to the top-plate h5 of the head in any suitable manner.

Supposing the sunshade to be in folded position, as shown in Fig. l, and it is desired to open the same, the post C is raised or lowered 5 5 to the desired height by means of the handle D and the same set in adjusted position by means of the screw D. The ribs F and the covering G can now be opened.

The drawings show the pull-cords attached 6o in pairs by means of the rings k. Taking now hold of one ring and pulling downwardly thereon, so as to engage the same over the pin m, one pair of ribs F and the portion of the cover attached thereto are raised; and

then taking hold of the other ring and pulling down and securing the same in the same manner the other pair of ribs F and the corresponding portion of the cover are raised, so that all the ribs and the cover are in the desired open position. It is evident without further illustration that the means of pulling the pull-cords, and of securing the same in position may be varied. without departing from the spirit of the invention.

By making the head H detachable from the post C, the same together with the ribs and covering can be removed so as to facilitate storage in a smaller compass. The covering can also be removed from the ribs for the purpose of being washed and so as to obviate injury by rust of the metallic parts depositing on the same.

Having thusdescribed our inventiomwe claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a portable snnshade, the combination with a hollow standard and a base for supporting the same, said standard being provided with a longitudinal slot, of a post pro` vided with a handle, the shank of which extends through said slot whereby saidipost is adapted to be raised and lowered, al set-screw entering the standard and adapted to engage said post, folding radiating ribs pivoted at the upper end of said post,a` coveror awningapplied to said ribs, and means for folding and unfolding the ribs and cover, substantially as set forth.

2. In a portable sunshade, the combination with a post and means for supporting the same, of a removable head appliedto theup-` per end of the post, pulleysmounted in said head, radiating ribs pivoted to the under side of the head, a cover or awning applied tosaid ribs, pull-cords connected with the outer ends of said ribs, extending` along the upper side of said cover and passing over said pulleys, and then extending through an opening in the lower part of the head, and means for manipulating said pullcords, substantially as set forth.

3. In a portable sunshade, the combination with a post and means for supporting the same, of a head applied to the upper end of said post, pulleys mounted in,said head, ra diating ribs pivoted to the under side of the head, a cover or awning applied to said ribs, pull-cords attached to the ribs and passing over said pulleys, spring friction iin gers applied to the upper part of the head and adapted to engage said pullcords, and rings at the lower ends of said pull-cords for the purpose of operating them, said head having in its lower part an opening for the downward passage of the pull-cords, substantially as set forth.

4. In a portable sunshade, the combination with a hollow standard and a base for supporting the sam e, said standard having a 1ongitudinal slot,of a post sliding in said standard and provided with means of adjustment, a handle arranged on one side of saidpost IOO and extending through said slot, a pin projecting laterally from an upwardly-extending lug on the handle, ahead at the upper end of the post, pulleys mounted in said head, ra-

- 5 diating ribs pivoted to the head, pull-cords connected with the outer ends of the ribs and passing over said pulleys and through an opening in the inner side of the head, and rings at the lower ends of the cords, said rings ro being adapted to engage over said pin and support the cover or awning in open position, substantially as set forth.
