H. J. HALL. A DRAW 0R BOX FOR HOLDING INDEX GAR-DS. No. 533,988. Patented Feb. l2, 1895.
MTPIEEEEE] y UNITED STATES APATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. HALL, F SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
. D'RAW OR BOX FORl HOLDING INDEX-CARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. E 3,988, dated February 12, 1895.
l Application led .Tune 1, 1894..` Serial No. 513,192. (No modeh) To a/ZZ whom it may concern.: i
Be it known that I, HENRY J. HALL, of Somj erville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new andusefu'l Improvements in Boxes for Holding Index-Cards, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the method of fastening the card-holding rod of a draw or box for holding index cards, so that it cannot accidentally slide out of place, and yet be readily removed when desired, the object being to simplify and cheapen the construction. This object I attain by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows in longitudinal section, a part of a card draw and a card-holding rod' and its connections. Fig. 2 'shows in elevation the knob of the cardholdingrod and the escutcheon. Fig. 3 shows a part of the cardholding rod and its knob, also showing a section of the escutcheon all enlarged. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the front of the escutcheon. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the back of the escutcheon.
In the drawings, Arepresents a draw or box suitable for holding reference cards B, each of which has a hole through it for receiving the rod C. The rod C has at its end a knob D which has a small neck D3 (as shown in Fig. 3) between the member D2and iange D. The member D2 may be called the locking member. In shape it is a cone terminating in a circular base as shown in Figs. l and 3. Between the locking member D2 and the flange D is a short cylindrical neck D2l of smaller diameter than either the flange Dor the lock.- ing member D2 so that there is a groove extending entirely around the neck D3. This construction of the knob admits of its locking itself to the edge H2 of the hole H vmade in the escutcheon H, irrespective of theway in which it is turned. The hole H through the escutcheon H islocated'as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, somewhat above the center of the same, so that when the neck D3 of the knob rests on the edge H3 of the escutcheon, the knob will be central on the escutcheon. The hole H is large enough to allow the locking member D2 to pass through, the parts being so arranged thatwhen the neck of the knob is allowed to rest on the edge H3 of the escutcheon, the locking 'member D2 will hold the rod C frombeing drawn out, especially as th e weight of the cards as well as the rod, will have a tendency to keep theneck D3 of the knob pressed down on to the edge Hs of the escutcheon.
To draw out the rod, the user has simply to lift the knob sufficiently to raise the lower edge of the locking member D2 above the edge H3 of the escutcheon, when the knob and rod can be drawn out.
To prevent the upper edge of the locking member D2from engaging withthe upper edge of the hole H', I reinforce the escutcheon at this point with a part H2 (Figs. 3 and 5) so that its thickness is so great that it cannot pass into the annular groove around the neck rand between thelocking member D2 and liange D.
I claim- 1. In a box or drawer for reference cards, an escutcheon affixed to the front of the box o1' drawer and having a circular opening adapted to admit of the insertion of the locking member of the knob in any position, and a rod having a knob and a circular locking member and an annular groove adapted to engage and lock, irrespective of the Way it is turned, with the escutcheon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Y
2. Inabox or drawer for reference cards, the combination of an escutcheon aflixed to the front of the box, having a circular opening H said opening H being bounded on its upper side by a reinforcing piece H2 as described; with a rod C having a knob and circular locking member and an annular groove adapted (See Fig. 3.)
to engage and lock irrespective of the wayit` is turned, with the escutcheon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 29th day of May, A. D. 1894:.
HENRY J. HALL.
