Be it known that I, -W1LLIAM J. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sewing-Machine Feed Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain improvements upon the subject matter of Letters Patent No. 460,730, issued to me October 6, 1890, for feeding mechanism for sewing machines; the object of the presentimprovement being to provide a simple and effective construction and arrangement of parts, aording cheapness in manufacture, and a ready and convenient adjustment to e-Eect any required length of stitch; the present invention consisting in the construction and combination of parts by which such results are obtained, and as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly indicated in the claims. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewing machine illustrating the general arrangement of my present invention; Fig. 2, an inverted plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section at line --rc Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the feed bar of the sewing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents the four motion feed bar, by which the feeding of the material during the sewing operation is effected.
As in my former patented construction the required motion is communicated to the feed bar 1, by the longitudinally extending bar or rod 2, journaled at its forward end in a bearing bracket 3, located at a point forward of the feed bar 1, the journal being formed by a spherical end on the bar or rodi?, engaged by a holding screw fi, the end of which is made cup shaped as in my former invention. A
gyrating motion is imparted to the rear end of the bar or rod 2, by the link connection 5, the upper end of which is formed with an eccentric yoke 6, engaging an operating eccentric 7, on the drivingJ shaft 7, of the machine, the lower end of the link connection 5, being provided with cylindrical eye 8, to receive the spherically formed rear end of the gyratin g shaft or rod 2.
In the'construction shown the link connection 5, is slotted vertically as shown, and in the vertical slot 9, thus formed a vertically adjustable pivot pin 10, engages to form a variable pivot for such link, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The pin 10, is attached to a vertically adjustable slide 11, moving in a guide slot 12 in the vertical arm of the inachine and adaptedl to be secured at the required adjustment by means of a clamping screw 11. W'ith this construction, the circle of gyration of the lower end of the link 5, in a vertical plane will remain constan t, regardless of the adjustment of the pivot pin 10, and consequently the up and down movements ofthe four motion feed bar 1 will remain constant; the adjustment of the pin 10 affecting the gyration of the before mentioned parts in a horizontal plane, increasing as the pin 10, is adjusted upwardly toward the operating eccentric, and decreasing as such pin is adj usted downwardly away from the eccentric. By this means the backward and forward movements of the four motion feed bar are regulated and adjusted to suit any particular requirement without affecting the up and down movements of such feed bar, which remain constant at all times.
In the present invention connection is made between the feed bar 1 and the gyratory shaft 2, by means of a bracket piece 13, attached to said bar and having a rearwardly extending arm 14, the rear end of which is bent upwardly and forked to embrace the gyratory shaft 2, as shown.
In the drawings 15, is the ordinary shuttle lever receiving motion through lever 16, from the operating eccentric 17, on the main driving shaft as usual.
Having thus fully described my said inven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-u 1. A feeding mechanism for sewing machines comprising in `combination, the fulcruined four motion feed bar 1, a gyratory shaft 2, journnied at nl point forwnrdof ther feed ber, and bearing against the under side of the saine, a bracket ypiece 18,'xed1y secured to the feed bnr, and having a rearwardly extending forked arm 14 engaging the gyratory shaft 2, and means for imparting a gyrntory motion tothe rear end of the shaft 2, substantially as set forth.
