SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,181, dated July 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDDY T. THOMAS, of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention in sewingmachines includes improvements in devices for actuating the usual four-motioned under-feeding device positively in all its directions, and also improvements in the supportfor the horizontally-vibratin g shuttle-carrying lever, and for the horizontally and vertically vibrating feed-lever.
In this my invention the horizontal lever which actuates the usual four-motioned underfeeding device is pivoted upon a loose collar or ring held loosely upon a vertical stud. The said lever is vibrated horizontally by a vertical lever, the upper end of which has an arm made adjustable thereon, so that the change of position of the said arm places its upper end on a post (of greater or less radius) of a tapered can], which thus causes the said vertical and horizontal levers to be vibrated more or less to alter the feeding stroke of the usual feeding device. The horizontally vibrating shuttlecarrying lever, forked at its rear end, is actuated by a vibrating vertical lever provided with a ball-like end, the said vertical lever having a third arm provided with an adjustable link, which, connected at its lower end with the horizontal feed-moving lever before referred to, enables the latter to be raised and lowered positively to effect the lowering and raising of the usual feeding device.
Figure 1 represents in partial vertical section a sufficient portion of a sewing-machine to illustrate my present improvements; Fig. 2, a section of a part of the vertical lever for moving the horizontal lever of the feeding mechanism, the section being on the dotted line as, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail illustrating in side elevation from the left of Fig. 1 on the dotted line y a part of the vertical lever which vibrates the horizontal shuttle-carrying lever, the said figure showing the adjustable connection between the said lever and the horizontal lever of the feeding mechanism, the lower end of the vertical lever of the shuttle-actuating mechanism and the end of its connected horizontal lever being omitted to avoid confusion on the drawings. Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section on the dotted line 00 Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail, showing the compound support for the horizontal lever of the feeding mechanism.
Before commencing to describe my present improvement I will state that the under fourmotioned feeding device and the shuttle-carrier omitted from Fig. 1 will preferably in practice he the same as shown in my application N 0. 50,108 for United States Letters Patent, to which reference may be had.
The frame-work A has in its upper portion the usual main rotating shaft, a, the forward end of which in practice carries any usual devices for actuating the needle-bar. a has upon it a tapering cam, 12, to move the feed-actuating mechanism, and an eccentric or cam, c, of usual construction, which is embraced by the upper end of the vibrating lever 01 of the shuttle-actuating mechanism. The lower end of lever 01 has a ball, 0 which is entered between the forks or jaws 0 of and is made to actuate the horizontally-vibrating shuttle-carrying lever 0 of usual construction, the latter lever being herein shown as held between two comically-pointed studs, 2 3, one of which is made as a screw to afford adjustment to provide for wear. The stud 3 hasits shank set in a hole in a yoke or bracket, 6, bolted or otherwise secured to the under side of the framework A. This bracket (see Fig. 4) has a downwardly-extended hub, 4, about which is placed a loose collar,f, which is held in place on the hub 4 by a screw, 9. The loose collar freceives the conical ends of the center screws, h, which, extended through the horizontal lever g of the feed-actuating mechanism, serve as the fulcra for the said lever. This lever 9 will in practice have its front end shaped as shown in my application referred to, and the said lever will be connected with a feeding device, as shown in the said application. The collar f and the center screws, h, permit the lever g to be vibrated both vertically and horizontally. The lever 9 forked at its rear end,

The arm at is acted upon at one side (see Fig. 1) by a spring, m which keeps the arm pressed against an adjusting-screw, at, having a milled headm the shank of the said screw, extended through a slot of the frame-work A, being held in an ear, n forming part of the lever 9 By turning the screw it the position of the arm at may be changed on the cam 11, so that a part of the said cam, of greater or less radius, will actuate the lever g and vibrate it more or less, and consequently move the lever 9 more or less, according to thelength of feed or stitch desired.
To raise and lower the front end of lever more or less to cause the usual under-feeding device to engage the material with more or less force and retire from it at the proper times, I have provided the lever g with an ear, 7L2, which is engaged by a link or connecting-rod, h, the upper end of which,(see Fig. 3,) placed in a slot, 5, of arm 12 of lever 07, is engaged by the adjusting screw or device If. The-time of engagement of the usual feeding device with the under side of the material being sewed willbecontrolledbythesaidadjusting-screw.
I claim- .1. In the feeding mechanism of a sewing- I machine, the vertical lever provided with an adjustable movable arm, combined with a cam to actuate the said arm and lever and vibrate the arm more or less, according to the position of the arm with relation to the said cam, substantially as described.
2. The shaft to, its cam b, the vertical lever and its adjustable movable arm to be acted upon by the said cam, combined with means to adjust the said arm, substantially as described.
3. The shaft a, its tapering cam Z), the vertical lever and its adjustable movable arm, and means to adjust the said arm, combined with the pivoted horizontal feed-actuating lever 9 substantially as and for the purpose de-- scribed.
4. The lever 61, provided with the arm 19, and the horizontal feed-actuating lever, combined with a link or connecting-rod, 7L3, whereby the feed-actuating lever is actuated from the lever d to raise and lower the usual under-feeding device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The three-armed lever dp, its adjustingscrew, and link or connecting-rod 7L IDOXBd by it, combined with the feed-actuating lever 9 with which one end of the said rod is connected, substantially as described.
6. The shaft to and the conical or tapering cam I), combined with the pivoted lever 9 the arm m, pivoted thereto at m and the adjusting-screw a, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. The bracket 0, secured at its ends to the frame-work, the conical screws above the top of the said bracket to hold the shuttle-lever, and the shuttle-lever, combined with the collar and center screws below the said bracket, the feed-lever g and the levers d and 9 to move the levers c g, substantially as described.
