SAMUEL MOREAU, OF IRONVVOOD, MICHIGAN.
CHAIN-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,548, dated February 5, 1 895. PP Decemhcr 6, 1893. Renewed December 28, 1894. Serial No. 533,232. (No model.)
To cull whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MORE-AU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ironwood, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chainrenches, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention has relation to that class of wrenches in which an adjustable chain is employed to pass around the pipe or other article to be turned, this chain co-operating with the wrench head in enabling the article to be firmly held as the wrench is operated. The object of my invention is to improve this construction of chain wrenches and more particularly to provide improved means whereby the adjustment of the chain can be readily effected and whereby the wrench can be more firmly, quickly and securely caused to grip the pipe or like article without danger of slipping, than is possible with any other wrench of which I am aware.
The novel features of my invention will be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein the same is illustrated and will be particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical central section. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is adetail section of the adjusting sleeve. Fig. 5 is a detail edge view of the lower part of the body showing part of the chain. Fig. 6 is a detail front view of part of the chain.
A designates the body of my improved wrench that is provided at one end with a suitable handle a and at its opposite end with means whereby the chain B may have one of its ends anchored thereto and may have its other end detachably connected thereto. In order to effect the connection of the chain B, I prefer to slot or bifurcate the end of the body A and to form this end with the perforation a through which passes a belt a? that passes through one end of the link I) of the chain B, it being understood that the end of the link I) enters the slotted end of the body A in order to bring the perforation of the link coincident with the hole a. This end of the body A is also provided with two sets of claws a each set of claws extending parallel to each other and being separated a sufficient distance to admit the chain 13. The chain B is formed preferably of forged steel links of the construction shown, the pintles or pivot bolts of the links of which the free end of the chain is formed, extending laterally a sufficient distance to enter the spaces a. between the claws a Upon the body A of the wrench is mounted the head or box 0, this head being held in manner free to slide upon the body A and being provided with a through bolt 0 that passes through a long slot a formed in the body A. The head or box C has its edges cut away to permit the passage of the claws a and the chain B,and is provided with the serrated extensions c preferably curved in outward direction as shown and with the plain oppositely extending portions 0 The extension 5: are separated a sufficient distance from each other to span the lower edge of the body A and to permit the chain claws to pass freely therethrough and by thus forming the head of box C with the extensions as shown a square and firm bearing is afforded whereby the wrench is enabled to securely and effectively grasp the pipe or other article on which they are to be used, and with the broad square bearing thus formed all danger of turning or slipping of the wrench is guarded against even when operating on perpendicular pipes.
The body is formed with a threaded portion a with which engages the threads d formed upon the interior of the sleeve D through which the body A passes. The sleeve D has its outer face formed preferably with annular ridges or knurls d to permit the sleeve to be readily turned and at one end of this sleeve is formed an annular groove d to receive the lug or extension 0 that is formed at one end of the head or box 0. Hence it will be seen that when it is required to shift the head or box 0 upon the body A it is only necessary to turn the sleeve D either upward or downward. By preference the claws a at the end of the body A are formed at such distance apart as to engage the two adjacent operated upon the head or box 0 will be placed thereon with the extension 0 and extensions orguards 0 bearing squarely thereon after which the chain B will be passed around the pipe and its free end will be engaged by the claws a In order now to tighten the wrench the sleeve Dwill be turned downward thereby causing the body A to move outward from the pipe and thus give the desired tension to the chain B. By providing the wrench with the guards or extensions 0 not only is the wrench more squarely held upon the pipe or other article but by the bearing of these extensions upon the pipe as the wrench is turned backward the teeth of the wrench are protected from contact with the pipe; and these extensions 0 also aid in preventing the chain from becoming disconnected. The adjustment of the head or box 0 is manifestly of great importance because it enables the chain to be tightened to the desired extent quickly and without the necessity of disconnecting it. It will also be seen that the head or box 0 affording a broader bearing upon the pipe or like article greatly strengthens the wrench at the point where it is subjected to excessive strain.
It is manifest that the details of construc tion above set out may be varied without departingfromthespiritoftheinvention. Thus while I regard the construction of chain shown, as the preferred one, it is obvious that other forms of chain might be used and that the precise shape of the parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings may be modified within wide limits.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A chain wrench comprising a body provided at one end with means for connectinga chain thereto and with a head orbox mounted upon said body and adjustable upand down thereon and extending beyond the same so as to bear upon the article to be turned, and a chain connected to said body, substantially as described.
2. A chainwreuch comprising a body provided at one end with a handle and at its other end with means for connecting the chain to said body and a box or head adjustably mounted upon said body and projecting beyond the same so as to bear upon the article to be turned, said box or head being adjustable up and down upon said body without revolving' and means for holding said box or head at different positions upon said body, substantially as described.
3. A chain wrench comprising a body provided with a handle at one end and provided at its opposite end with a chain and with suitable claws to detaohably hold one end of said chain and a head or box arranged to bear on the article to be turned and adjustable up and down upon said body, and through which said body passes, substantially as described.
4. A chain wrench comprising a body having one end of achain attached thereto and provided with a suitable laterally projecting portion to engage the other end of said chain and a head or box mounted upon said body and adjustable up and down thereon and proj ecting beyond the same to engage the article to be turned, substantially as described.
5. A chain wrench comprising a body A having one end of the chain attached thereto and provided with means for detachably engaging theother end of said chain, a head or box extending beyond said body to engage the article to be turned, and means for adjusting said head or box up or down upon said body of the wrench, substantially as described.
, 6. A chain wrench comprising a body pro- Vided withmeans for connecting the chain thereto, a head or box through which said body passes and which is provided with a projecting portion to bear against the article to be turned, and a threaded sleeve engaging a corresponding threaded portion of said body, said sleeve being arranged to shift said head or box, substantially as described.
7. A chain wrench comprising a body provided with means for connecting the chain thereto a head or box through which said body passes and which is provided with a serrated bearing portion, and a threaded sleeve engaging a corresponding threaded part of said body, said sleeve being connected to said head or box, substantially as described.
8. A chain wrench comprising a body having at one end a handle and having at its opposite end claws for engaging the chain and provided also with screw-threads and with a slot, a head or box through which said body passes, said head or box being provided with a bolt passing through the slot of said body, and a sleeve adjustably mounted upon the threaded portion of said body and engaging said head or box, substantially as described.
9. A chain wrench comprising a body provided with 'a chain attached thereto and a head or box adj ustably mounted on said body, said head or box being provided with a serrated extension 0, and with an opposite plain extensionc substantially as described.
10. A chain wrench comprising a body A provided with the claws a a head or box 0 movably mounted upon said body A and having the extensionsc and 0 said head or box being cut away opposite said claws a and a sleeve D adjustably mounted upon said body A, substantially as described.
