WIRE FENCE.
No. 533,515. Patented Feb.

LEWIS M. WILL, OF MOUNT JACKSON, VIRGINIA.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,515, dated February 5, 1895.
Application led May 8, 1894. Serial No. 510,536. (No model.)
To all whoml it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS M. WILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Jackson, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Vire Fence, of which the following is a specification.
' The invention relates to improvements in wire fences.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wire fences, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong and durable one, in which the fence Wires may be readily tightened from time to time, and adjusted to secure the desired tension.
rIhe invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a fence, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of one of the end posts. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, illustrating the manner of attaching the pickets to the fence Wires.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates horizontal fence wires secured to end posts 2 by wire stretchers 3, and stapled to an intermediate post 4. The horizontal wires, which may beof any desired number, are connected at regular intervals between the posts by alternately arranged long and short pickets, 6 and 7, which are secured to each adjacent fence Wire by a wire tie 8. The wire tie 8 is approximately rectangularto conform to the configuration of the picket, and it terminates in eyes 9 receiving the fence wire.
Each wire tightener comprises a shaft or spindle, having its inner portion 10 fixed in a perforation of the post 2, a drum journaled on the shaft, and provided with an annular ange or ratchet 11, formed integralwith the drum and arranged adjacent to the post, and provided at its periphery with notches or recesses 12', and a pin 13 or other similar fastening device, adapted to engage a notch of the annular ilange or ratchet, and designed to be driven into the post to prevent the wire tightener from rotating backward and looseningthe wire. The outer end 14 of the drum of the wire tightener is squared to receive a Wrench or a similar tool, whereby the shaft is rotated.
It will be seen that the fence is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is strongr and durable, and that the fence Wires may be tightened at each end, and that the tension of the fence Wires may be readily adjusted to take up slack, and to prevent breakage.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing ,from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In afence, the combination of a post, a horizontal shaft rigidly mounted thereon and projecting therefrom, a wire tightener coinprising a drum arranged on the shaft and provided with a rounded inner portion to receive a Wire and having a polygonal Wrench receiving outer portion, said wire tightener being provided at its inner end with an integral annular flange fitting against the post, and provided with peripheral notches, and a pin projecting from the post and arranged inY one of the notches of the flange, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS M. IVILL.
Witness es J. A. WHITMEE, J. L. BRENAMAN.
