ICE-CREEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,308, dated January 29, 1895 Application filed May 14, 1894- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN MAYER, of Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Ice-Creepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains tomake and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings," which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved ice creeper; and the object of the same is to provide a detachable cap for the heel which is easily applied and readily removed and which is very effectual in preventing slipping.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of mydevice in position on a shoe heel. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 4c is a bottom plan View with the wearing surface removed.

A designates a flexible band which encircles and clasps the heel tightly, and depending therefrom and drawn inward toward a common center are the V-shaped strips B which are secured to the elastic cross strips 0, the latter forming substantially a Maltese cross. To the under side of these strips is secured the wearin g surface D which consists of alternate strips of rubber and a textile material arranged on edge vertically as shown. This wearing surface is provided with the radial strips or cuts E which permit expansion of the surface so as to conform to the shape of the heel bottom.

By the construction and arrangement here shown and described it will be seen that the whole creeper is elastic so as to be readily adjusted to heels of various sizes. The al- Serial No. 511,196- (No model.)

ternate strips of rubber and textile material which constitute the wearing surface of the device protect each other from wear and the textile portion is especially adapted for this useas it is not liable to slip on smooth surfaces. The creeper is circular in form and will adjust itself to the shape of the heel, no matter what its position is when placed thereon. As is well known the rear portion of heels wear down first, so that were it not for the fact that any side or portion of the creeper surface may be placed at the rear the device would Wear through at this point and be worthless While the remainder is comparatively sound.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved ice creeper comprising a securing device, a wearing surface sectioned by radial cuts, an elastic connection between the sections and a flexible connection between said surface and securing device, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an ice creeper, the combination of the securing band, radial strips B extended in pairs to the securing band, cross strips O secured centrally to the strips B and so arranged that the angular spaces formed by their ends intersect the strip pairs as shown, and a wearing surface secured to strips 0 and cut radially to break with the spaces between the strips B, substantially as shown and described. v
