INDEXFASTENER FOR FILE-CASES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,190, dated January 29, 1895.

- or cabinet drawer, my said invention consisting of the means, substantially as hereinafter set forth, for fastening the index-leaves within the case.

In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved fastener in an operative position, and Fig. 2, is afront or face elevation of same, on a scale somewhat enlarged, with the index removed. Fig. 3, is a vertical section on dotted line 3, 3, of Fig. 2, looking toward the right hand in said latter figure, with index in position, the latter being' partially broken away. Fig. 4, is a side elevation of my improved index-fastener, detached from the file-case shown in the preceding` gures. Figs. 5 and 6, are front and side views, respectively, of a slight modication of the device attached to the file-case for engaging and locking my improved fastener.

My invention is best illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, in which A, represents a liat strip of metal, the latter having an index-wire or rod, B, attached thereto, said rod being bent at top to form the two angular portions, h and h2, the latter portion, b2, being bent on a line substantially parallel with the main rod, B, the top end of the rod so bent being attached to the plate, A, some distance below its top, leaving a space, C, between said plate and the angular portion b2 of the index rod, as best shown in Figs. 3, 4. and 6.

The lower end of the index-rod, B, is bent to form the angular portion, h5, which latter is attached to the lower portion of plate A in any suitable manner.

The index-leaves, D, are perforated centrally, near their rear edge, and are strung upon the wire, B, before the latter is attached to its plate, A.

Some suitable means must be provided for securing and locking the plate A to the inner face of the filingcase or cabinet; and for that purpose I have shown two devices, but it is evident that other means might be employed for this purpose.

In Figs. 1,2 and 3, E, represents a lockplatehaving a slot e extending from its bottom portion upward, about two-thirds of its length,said slot being located centrally within the plate, as shown, which will permit said plate to slide down over the outer face of the index-plate, A, and lock in between said plate A and the angular portion, b2, of the indexrod, as shown in Fig. 3. In this construction, just described, the top portion of plate E,im mediately above its slot, e, engages within. the space C between the top of plate A and angular portion, h2. This slotted plate, E, maybe attached to the front edge of the file-case, F, in any suitable manner, and is .shown as provided with an outer down-bent iiange, e2, which engages on the outer face of the case, as shown in Fig. 3.

In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a plate, H, attached to the inner face of the case, said plate having top and bottom flanges, h, slotted centrally, which flanges are Iexible and are adapted to be bent and overlap the top and bottom edge of plate A, and thus secure the latter in place, as shown.

My improved index-fastener is simple of construction, and affords an economic device on which theindex-leaves can be adjusted, while the intervening space, O, between the top of plate A and the angularly bent rod, affordsa secure means (in conjunction with lock-plate E) forattachment with the file-case.

I am aware that it is not new, broadly', to provide a device for securing index-leaves within a tile-case; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. An index-fastener consisting of plate A having a le-rod, B, attached thereto in such a manner as to provide a space, C, between the top of said plate and rod,for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of plate A, and iile-rod IOO B, the latter being bent to form the angular portions b, b2 and b3, the portion b2 being attached to said plate some distance below its top portion, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with a le-ease having a slotted look-plate, E, an index-fastener consisting of a plate A having a tile-rod attached thereto with a space C between Said latter plate and its rod, the leek-plate engaging Within said space, as set forth.
