UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RYAN HEATON, OF HOWELLS DEPOT, NEW YORK.
FELTlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,875, dated January 22, 1895.
Application filed November 2, 1894. Serial No. 52 7,765- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RYAN HEATON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Howells Depot, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Felting-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in felting machines, the same being designed more especially as an improvement upon my Patent No. 527,283, dated October 9, 1894.
- The present invention consists in providing .the machine with a rigid former having a flat base and convex top, said former being adapted to be incased within a shell the lower portionof which is held rigid while the upper portion whichcovers the top and sides of the former is connected to have a horizontal reciprocating or vibratory movement thereon, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a felt hardening or shaping machine constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view through the line 33 of Fig. 2.
A designates the supporting frame or table which is of substantially the same construction as that described in my prior patent referred to. Upon this table is suitably journaled a shaft B having a crank, eccentric or equivalent device at one end to which a rod B is attached, the other end of said rod being attached to a slide 0 supported in guides attached to the table A, so that when the shaft B is rotated the slide 0 will be reciprocated by means of the connecting-rod or pitman B. In practice this reciprocating movement is very slight.
VD designates an arm which is rigidly attached to the top of the table A and is provided on its upper side with the guide for the slide 0. To the outer end of this arm is rigidly secured a hollow former D, said former having a fiat horizontal base dand upper portion d curved transversely, the upper portion beingperforated as shown. This hollow former D is suitably connected to a steam supply by a pipe (1 and the felt to be operated upon is placed around said former.
The shell which incases the former is made of two parts the lower partE being hinged to the edge of the table and is held up in position by the arm F which is hinged thereto and engages with the floor at its lower end, being guided by strips f. Other means for supporting the part E of the shell may be substituted for the arm F. The under side of the upper part E of the shell corresponds in configuration to the upper part of the former D so that it will lie immediately over the same. The part E is hinged to the reciprocating block 0, and when lowered upon the hat or felt may be held against upward movement by means of a depending rod as shown. The upper part of the shell being connected to the slide 0 is reciprocated by the connecting-rod or pitman B, and the movement of the same being very slight there is no danger of displacing the rod.
I prefer to use rods for holding theparts of the shell in place and a table constructed as shown in my patent above referred to, for I can thereby apply the improvements herein described to the table, and operating and holding means set forth in said patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a felt hardening or forming machine, the combination, of a supporting table having reciprocating means mounted thereon and connected to a sliding block 0, a hollow former D rigidly secured to the table, said former having a fiat base and curved upper portion,
and a shell which in closes the former com-- posed of parts E and E the part E being hinged to the table and the part E connected to the block 0 to receive a reciprocating movement therefrom, together with rods or turned side edges and the part E being connected to the block C to receive a reciprocating movement therefrom, and rods which bear against the parts of the shell and hold them in place, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RYAN HEATON. Witnesses:
