Be it known that I, LEWIS 0. BROWN, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Oolton, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented acertain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Pivoted Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has relation to oil cans, pivoted in a suitable case'and adapted to be transported from place to place with ease, convenience and safety, and it consists in providing such a can with a stopper which will automatically close the can and keep the can from revolving on its pivot.

In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a sectional view of the can and case. Fig.

2 is a perspective View of the stopper.

The invention is described as follows:

1, represents the case in which is pivotally supported the can 2, having the discharge spout 3.

4, designates a vent tube which is secured at one end to the outside of the spout 3. The other end of said vent enters the can 2. The mouth of the vent 4c, is in the same plane with the mouth of the spout 3.

The extreme ends of the spout 3, and the vent 4, are adapted to engage the stopper 5. Said stopper consists of a piece of spring metal and is secured at one end to the case 1. The under side of the stopper is provided with a soft packing 6, and the extreme end of the said stopper is formed with a catch 7, which is adapted to pass over and under the lip of the spout 3, and thereby hold the can stationary on its pivot point. The canmay also be provided with an additional vent 8. Said vent 8, enters the can and when the can is closed the end of the vent 8, enters a pocket 9, which is attached to the case 1.

The metallic rod 10 passes through the can just above and in front of the center thereof.

The sides of the can are soldered to the rod 10 and the extreme ends of said rod enter the sides of the case 1, and thus the can is pivoted.

The oil is introduced into the can through the inlet 11. When it is desired to draw oil out of the can the catch 7, of the stopper is disengaged from the lip of the spout 3. The can is then tilted forward as indicated by the dotted lines and when sufficient oil is drawn the can will automatically assume the position shown in the heavy lines. This is accomplished by the eccentric pivoting of the can in the case. The case is provided in its top with the handle 12.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a pivoted can mounted in a case a device for closing the spout of the can and for holding the can in a stationary position, consisting of a piece of spring metal secured at one end to the case and extending down, a catch formed near the lower edge of said piece, said piece adapted to pass over the mouth of the spout of the can, when the can is in its normal position and the catch on said piece adapted to engage the spout and thereby hold the can, as set forth.

2. In a pivoted can mounted in a case a device for closing the spout of the can and holding the can stationary, consisting of a piece of spring metal secured at one end to the case and forming a stopper for the spout, the end of the piece formed with a catch adapted to pass over and under the edge of the spout, as set forth.
