SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,626, dated January 15, 1895. Application filed September 7,1894- Serial No. 522,332. (No model.)

Be it known that I, DOMINGO ACOSTA, of Key West, in the county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Device for Bundling Cigars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a device for bund parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,

and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the cabinet open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on line 22 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. In carrying out the invention the cabinet consists of a box body A and a cover or lid B. The body and lid combinedly may partake of any shape that fancy may dictate. The cover is provided with any form of latch capable of connection with the body to hold the cover in a closed position, and the said cover when released from the latch is thrown to the upright or fully open position by means of springs 10, and the cover is maintained in such an upright position by securing upon its inner face at each end a runner 11, upon which a link 12 is adapted to travel, pivotally attached to the end portions of the body.

The bodyA of the cabinet is preferably provided with two main partitions 13 and 14,10- cated one at each side of the center, dividing the said body into three transverse compartments; and in the inner face of each of the partitions 13 and 14, a horizontal groove 15 is produced, extending from end to end of the body of the cabinet, and the space between the forward partition 13 and the front of the cabinet is normally closedby a cover 16, arranged in such manner that the cover may be raised or removed, and forming thereby a compartment 0, in which tools necessary for use in connection with bundling and packing cigars may be packed, as for example a hammer, pencil and scissors.

are held to slide, being provided with ribs entering the grooves 15 or slideways in the said partitions 13 and 14; and each of the said blocks is provided upon its under face with a spring 18, which by its engagement with the bottom of the cabinet will hold the blocks in whatever position they may be placed. Each block at its inner end is provided with a spring-controlled forming arm 19, the blocks being recessed to receive said arms, and the back of the recess is inclined outward in order to form stops against which the arms may bear so as to have an outward inclination. Each of the forming arms is provided at the top with a recess or slot 20; and the springs Between the inner partition 14 and the back 7 of the body of the cabinet, a series of auxiliary partitions 22 is longitudinally placed,

7 forming a series of spaces 23, and these spaces are preferably produced opposite the central portion of the central space D.

In the under face of the cover of the cabinet a recess E is formed, adapted to receive a gage F, and the said board is provided with a shank or extension F, integral with or attached to its under face, adapted to enter any of the spaces 23.between the auxiliary partitions 22, and the recess E in the cover adapted to receive the gage is correspondingly shaped and provided at its bottom with a spring 24, which is depressed when the gage is placed in the recess, and serves to hold the board in the same.

In operation, the gage is placed in any of the outer or inner spaces 23 between the auxing been placed in position the ribbon orband that is designed to tie the cigars in abundle is placed longitudinally along the central space D and carried upward in contact with the inner faces of the forming arms 19, and the ends of the band or ribbon are carried outward through the recesses 20 in the upper ends of said arms. The blocks 17 are now carried toward or from each other according to the size of the bundle to be made, and the cigars are placed between the forming arms, and when a sufficient quantity has been grouped between the said arms the band or other tie is gathered up and fastened so as to secure the cigars in a suitably shaped bundle.

When the device is not desired for use the forming arms are folded down into the space D, and the cover is closed after the gage F has been placed in its recess in the cover; and the said cover is then closed down upon the body of the cabinet.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a cigar bundling cabinet, the combina- 25 tion, with a body section, a spring-controlled cover, and guides adapted to hold the cover in an open position, substantially as described, the said cover being provided with a recess and a gage adapted to enter the recess, of adjustable forming arms located in the body of the cabinet, capable of movement to and from each other, the said forming arms being spring-controlled and pivoted in said body, and a series of sockets located at one side of and between the said forming arms, being adapted to receive the said gage, whereby when the board is placed in position it will level up the ends of the cigars, the forming arms serving to bundle the cigars and acting as supports for the tie designed to secure the cigars in a bundle, as and for the purpose set forth.
