Where but one jaw is shown, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the chain lies upon the periphery or exterior edges of such jaw, but where two jaws are used, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the chain itself may pass in between such jaws and the projecting pivot pins of such chain maylie against the surfaces of the jaws so as to 'allow-for the projecting ends of the pivot pins passing into the slots and being received by the hooks upon the edges of such jaws.
In Figs. l and 3 I have shown the hooks 5 upon separate plates B3 grooved to set upon the sides of the handle and resting at their edges against the back edges of the jaws and secured by a cross bolt as this construction allows for the removal of any injured part of the wrench.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination with the lever handle and chain in a wrench, of a jaw permanently connected with the handle and having grooves in its faces parallel orvnearly so with the edges of the jaw, and a link connected at one end tothe chain and having lateral projections at or near the other end to pass into the grooves of-the jaw, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the handle and chain in a pipe wrench, of two jaws secured at one end of the handle and at opposite sides thereof and having grooves in their inner faces parallel or nearly so with the edges of the jaws, and a link connected with one end of the chain and having lateral projections forming a T head, which projections pass into grooves in the inner faces of the jaws, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a wrench, of a handle, two jaws permanently connected at one end of the handle and having grooved surfaces and hooks upon the edges of the jaws adjacent to the handle, a chain having projections adapted to engage the hooks on the jaws that are adjacent to the handle, and a link at one end of the chain having lateral projections topass into the grooves of thejaws, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a handle, of two jaws that are nearly circular and recessed upon their inner faces to receive the handle,
and a cross pin or rivet for securing the parts together, the jaws having grooves in their faces parallel or nearly so to the edges of the jaws, a chain adapted to pass around the pipe, andan end link to the chain having lateral projections that engage the grooves in the jaw, and means for hooking the chain to the jaw or handle after the chain has been passed around the pipe or other article, substantially as set forth.
