TROLLEY-WIRE CLIP.

This invention relates to a novel support or hanger for the trolley wire of electric railways, and has for its object to provide a simple,
cheap, and efficient device for the purpose specified.
In accordance with this invention, the hanger comprises essentially'an ear, adapted to be secured to an insulator or other form of support, such as now commonly employed,
and provided on its under side or bottom with preferably two spring or adjustable arms, preferably integral with the body of the ear. The spring arms referred to, are preferably made concaved or substantially semi-circular on their under surface to substantially conform to the rounded upper surface of the trolley wire, with which they are designed to engage by means of adjusting devices, preferably threaded bolts inserted down through suitable threaded openings in the ear and adapted to engage the upper surface of the said spring arms. The ear has secured to it a substantially U-shaped metal clip upon which the trolley wire rests, and against the bottom of which the said trolley wire is pressed by the adjustable arms of the ear. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trolley wire hanger embodying this invention, a portion of the trolley wire being shown as secured to the said hanger. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ear with the sheet metal clip, shown in section; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 1 on the,line 33 looking toward the left, the adjusting bolt being shown in elevation, and Fig. 4, a modification to be referred to.
Referring to Fig. 2, A represents the ear of the trolley wire hanger, which may be made of any desired or suitablemetal and of any desired or suitable shape, but preferably of Serial No. 516,890. (No model.)

The ear A, in accordance with this invention, is provided on its under side with one or moreadjustable or movable arms or, preferably two such arms being attached to or forming part of the central or body portion a of the car on its under side and extended toward the opposite ends of the said ear. In the present instance, the arms a are shown as integral with the body portion a of the ear and sepa rated therefrom by spaces a extended from near the longitudinal center to the opposite ends of the said ear. The arms a are preferably made concaved or substantially semicircular on their under side to fit over and embrace the upper part of the trolley wire I), when the said arms are in their adjusted position.
The trolley wire I) is designed to rest upon the bottom of a substantially U-shaped clip I). of sheet metal or other suitable metal, which may be secured to the earA in any suitable manner, but I prefer to secure the said clip by providing the ear on its opposite sides with hooks, projections or fingers b adapted to be engaged by the upper edge or wall of slots or openings 6 in the upright sides 12 of the said clip.
The clip 1) may be secured to the ear, A and the trolley wire I) may be passed through the groove formed by the bottom of the clip and the arms a, and the said wire may then be firmly clamped to the hanger by bringing the arms a down in contact with the upper surface of the said wire, with sufficient pressure to force the wire against the bottom of the clip. This movement or adjustment of the arms a may be effected by means of adjusting devices, preferably threaded bolts 0 extended down through threaded sockets in the ends of the body portion of the ear, but i shown in Fig. 4, wherein h represents the key or bar inserted into the space a and provided with an upright arm h, having a hole in it through which a threaded bolt 71. is extendedinto a threaded socket in the end of the ear IOO A. In the present instance, the ear A is represented as provided with a substantially central boss or enlargement c which is provided with a threaded socket for the reception of the threaded end of a metal stud or shank 0 which may be secured to or form part of a suitableinsulator not shown, but if desired the said stud may be made integral with the ear, the said stud being represented as covered by insulating material 0 I claim- 1. In a trolley wire hanger, the combination with an ear, and a clip secured thereto for the reception of the trolley wire, of an arm secured to said ear and adapted to engage the said trolley wire, and means to engage the said arm with said wire, substantially as described.
2. In a trolley wire hanger, the combination with an ear provided on its under side with arms extended in the direction of the length of the ear, and a clip secured to the said ear to form a groove for the reception of the trolley wire, of devices to acton said arms to engage them with the trolley wire, for the purpose specified.
3. In a trolley wire hanger, the combination with an ear? provided on its under side with arms extended in the direction of the length of the ear and having concaved under, surfaces, and a clip secured to the said ear to form a groove for the reception of the trolley Wire, of devices to act on said arms to engage them with the trolley wire, for the purpose specified.
4c. In a trolley wire hanger, the combination with an ear provided on its under side with arms integral with the said ear and extended from the central portion toward the opposite ends of the said ear, a substantially U -shaped clip secured to the sides of the said ear and threaded adjusting bolts carried by the ear and acting on the said arms to force the trolley wire against the said'clip, substantially as described.
