Be lt known that I, SAMUEL STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing ab N01- ristown, in the eounty of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Slide Trombones; and I do declare the following to be a. full, c1ear, and exaet deseription cf the invention, such as will engzble others skilled in the art to whioh lt apperfia;ins to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a. locking attach- 1nent f0t preventing inadvertent separation 0f the parts of the instrument from the couneeting tube when being handled and noc in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention as applied t0 an instrument showing the locking latches 0r catches in operative position. Fig. 2 is a view a.t right angles with that in Fig. l, also showing the la.tches in position. Fig. 3 shows the parts 0f the instrument separated from eaoh other, the catches being disconnected from both sections a.nd one 0f the catches reversed am]. held by a controlling spring, this figure also including vlews 0f details of construction.

The lateh O is mounted between the fiamges s a.nd s while latch D works outsi le of flange s.
R is an annnlar band 01 collar secnred at 01 near the end of the hell section to form a shoulder with which the catch D interlocks to secure sa.id section to the eonnecting tube.
M is a lug or stud seeured to the slide portion 0f the instrument with whlch the swinging catch O interlocks.
WVhen the instrument is in use, the latch C is swung on its pivot to the unlocked posltion shown in Fig. 3 where it is held. by its coutrolling spring until said eatch is 1equired for locking the slide 150 the oonnecting tube.
Having now described my invention, what I elaim is- 1. In a trombone, the combination of the connecting tube, the bell portion having a collar 01 shoulder near its coupling end a.nd a latch attached to the tnbe for interlocking said tube and hell section, substantially as described.
2. In a. trombone, tl1e combination 0f a counecting taube the slide portion provided with a. lag and a. la.tch attached to the tube for locking the tube and the slide together, substantially as described.
3. In a. trombone, the eombination of the connecting tube, the bell-section and the slide portion, provided. with collar a.nd 111g respeetively and pivoted ca.tches or latehes for interloeking the parts, substantially as described.
4. In a tron1bone, the combination of tl1e connecting ruhe, tl1e slide section having a Ing, a swinging latch er catch for locking the tube und slide portions together and a spring for holding the la.tch in its locked and in its unlocked position, substantially as deseribed.
