Be it known that I, THnoDoR KUNDTZ, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables or Cabinets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to lmake and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in sewing-machine tables or cabinets and having means for lowering the head of the machine below the line of the table and means for automatically shifting the head toward and from the line of the liy-wheel of the machine in raising and lowering the head.

`My present invention consists, in the improved means employed for locking the sewing-machine-head in its elevated position, whereby the unlocking of the head preparatory to lowering the same, and the locking of the head upon its elevation and actuation lowered position. Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly in section, on line 4 4, Fig. 3, with the sewing-machine-head removed. Fig. 5 is a rear side elevation of the table or cabinet, showing the sewing-machine-head in its lowered position, portions being broken away to more clearly show the construction.

of course, suitably recessed or slotted to accommodate the location and operation of chain F. The arrangement and adjustment of par-ts are such that when leaf lB is actuated into position flush with the table-proper,

as shown in Figs. l and 2, door and carrier D shall be elevated so as to bring the sewingmachine -headbearing-frame E in position flush with the table-top, the latter being prozoo vided with a centrally located opening2 for the purpose of receiving said frame.

A block G is shown depending vfrom thev is such that during the elevation of door and carrier D member e enters groove g, whereby a further upward movement of the door and carrier causes frame E to be moved endwise in the direction of fly-wheelv H, and the arrangement of parts being further such that when the head is in its elevated or working position, the band-wheel C thereof shall be in line with the iiy-wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. In lowering door and carrier D, the motion of frame E is, of course, reversed, so that the frame and head will clear the fly-wheel. The frame and head are thus shifted automatically in raising and lowering door and carrier E; and the latter is operated by folding and unfolding leaf B. When the head is lowered, in accomplishing which leaf B is folded back over all, the leaf covers the opening in the table-top, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The sewing-machine cabinet is provided with doors, not shown, for closing the front side of the same, and hence when the sewingmachine-head is lowered, the machine is inclosed on all sides.

I would here remark that the opening in the rear wall of the cabinet is for the purpose of ventilation, in the operation of the machine.

It will be observed that member D not only performs the function of a carrier, but also serves as the door for `closing the opening in the rear wall of the cabinet, the arrangement of parts being such that said opening is closed by the carrier in the lower or inoperative position of the sewing-machine-head.

An important feature of my present invention consists in the mechanism employed for automatically locking the sewing-machinehead in its operative position and locking said head preparatory to actuating it into its lower or inoperative position. The locking mechanism is shown to be as follows z-A horizontally-swinging latch or lever I (see Fig. 2) is fulcrumed, as at I', within a hole B3 provided in the forward part of the table-top, and said latch or lever is adapted to engage a horizontal slot K in an upright latch-plate K suitably secured to the forward edge of shelf or platform D', said slot being open at one end to accommodate the reception of the lockinglatch or lever, and hole B3 in the tabletop being sufficiently large to accommodate the operation of said latch or lever. Latch or lever I is operatively 'connected with a rod or bar L that extends outwardly. and terminates in suitable proximity to the axial line of folding-leaf B,the table-top being provided with` a hole B4 to accommodate the location and operation of said rod or bar. The arrangement of parts is such that rod or bar L, in its normal position, when leaf B is folded over the sewing-machine-head, shall, at its outer end, protrude outside of the table-top, as shown at L in Fig. 3, into position to be engaged by the folding-leaf when the latter is actuated into position hush with the tabletop as required to elevate the sewing-machinehead into an operative position. Suitable means are provided for retaining rod or bar L, and consequently the lockinglatch or lever, in theirrnormal or inoperative position, and this means consists preferably of a leaf-spring M that is suitably supported within the table top and acts in the direction to retain the locking-latch or lever in its unlocking or inoperative position, said spring being engaged and adapted to be placed under tension, in actuating the locking-latch or lever into an operative position, by a lug or projection L2 on rod or bar L, and'hole B4 in the table-top is enlarged, as at B5, to accommodate the location and operation of said spring and to form suitable bearing, as at M', for the ends of the spring.

In combination, a sewing-machine-table or cabinet having a reciprocating-carrier D and folding-leaf B operatively connected with the carrier, a shelf or platform D rigid with the carrier and designed to bear the sewing-machine-head, latch-plate K fixed to said shelf or platform and provided with a slot K, swinging-latch I in the table'top, rod or bar L operatively connected with said latch and adapted to be operatively engaged by the aforesaid folding-leaf, said bar or rod having a lug or projection L2, a spring M engaging the aforesaid lug or projection on the latch-actuating bar or rod and the table-top being chambered to accommodate the location and operation of said spring and lockingmechanism, the arrangement of parts being substantially fied.
