HORSE-COLLAR FASTENER.

Be it known that I, PHILIP HAsnRooK DU- BOIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterloo, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Horse-Collar Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a fastening device for horse-collars; and it has for its object to provide a simple, e'dective, strong, and durable means for connecting the lower ends of collar-sections together; to provide means for adjusting said fastener to alter the size of the collar; and to provide means for connecting the haines te the collar-sections whereby the lower ends of said sections may be disccn nected to remove the collar without detaching the llames.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastening device embodying my invention, applied in the operative-position to a collar, the hames being also shown attached. Fig. 2 is a detail view, in perspective, of the fastener with the members thereof disconnected. Fig. 3 is a detail section, through a portion of the fastener, to show the means' for securing the male within the female meinber.

Similar numerals of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.

1 and 2 designate, respectively, the opposite parts or sections of a collar to which my improved fastening device is applied, said parts or sections being connected at their upper ends by any suitable flexible means, such as the ordinary straps and buckles 3, shown in the drawings. The fastening device for the lower ends of i he collar-sections comprises two interlocking members, of which the female member ai is tubular and carries a springactuated locking pin 5 and the male member 6 is round in cross-section, lits within the female member, and is provided with a series of spaced sockets 7 to receive the inner end of the said locking-pin to prevent accidental disengagement of the parts. is arranged in a slotted guide 8 attached to or integral with the female member of the fastener, fits at its inner endin a perforation 9 in the side of said member and at its outer end in a similar perforation l0 in the guide, and carries a finger-hold 11 which operates in the slots in the sides of the guide and serves to hold the coiled spring 12 as well as the locking-pin in place.

The remote extremities of the members of the fastener are flattened and perforated to form eyes 13, which tit in bifurcations of the securing plates 14. and these securing plates which are tapered toward theirouter ends and are substantially V-shaped in cross-section are fitted in the crease between the body and neck rolls of the collar sections. The inner ends of the securingplates are bifurcated, as described, to form the parallel eyes 15 between which the eyes on the outer ends of the members of the fastener lit and are held, pivotally, by the bolts 16.

The outer eyes formed by the bifurcation of the ends of the securing-plates carry loops 17, adapted to be engaged by the short billetstraps 18 and 19 which are attached, respect- 21, said haines :2O and 21 being fitted, respectively, in the creases of the collar-sections 1 and 2. Thus, each of the haines is attached independently to the collar-section upon which it is tted, and when the members of the fastener are disconnected for the purpose of removing the collar the haines may remain in place 0n the collar and may be applied, simultaneously with the collar, in harnessing.

The loop 22 for the attachment of a strap, (not showin) to connect with the girth, is secured to or formed integral with the female member ofthe coupling, adjacent to the guide for the locking-pin.

It will be understood that in practice, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, l claiml. A fastening device for the lower ends of horse collar sections, the same comprising seively, to the lower ends of the haines 2O and ICO curing plates angular' in cross-section to fit in the crease between the rolls ofthe collar sections, interlocking telescoping members pivotally connected yrespectively to the securing plates and adapted for horizontal swinging movement., a loop Vand a spring-actuated bolt carried by the exterior member, the interior member Vbeing provided with spaced perforatqns for the reception ofthe inner end of the bolt, and means for the attachment of the lower ends of hames tted upon the collar sections, substantially as specified.

2. A fastening device for the lower ends of horse-collar sections, the same comprising interlocking male and female members, securing-plates attached respectively to the collar sections, said members being pivotally connected to the securing-plates, loops carried respectively Vby the securing plates and adapted for engagement by straps at the lower ends of hames fitted upon the collar sections, and means for securing the members'at the desired extensiomsubstantially as specified.
