J. NEU. BUNG DRIVING MALLBT No. 532,008. Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
I (No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 J. NEU.
BUNG DRIVING MALLET.
N0. 532,008. Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
UNITE STATES PATENT JOHN NEU, OF PERU, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT MOSBACH, OF SAME PLACE.
BUNG-DRIVING MALLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 532,008, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed June 8, 1894. $erial No. 513.948. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN NEU, of Peru, in the county of La Salle, and in the State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bung-Driving Mallets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my mallet with the slot-filling block shown separated therefrom; Fig. 2, a vertical section of said mallet arranged for use, the drawing-0ft tube and the bung being shown in full lines, and a portion of the beer keg in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 a horizontal section V on line m-x of Fig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention is the pro vision of an eificient and convenient device for applying the bung and draw-oft tube of beer tapping apparatus to kegs, without injury to the bung or tube, and to this end my invention consists in the device constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter speci- The means usually employed for tapping beer from kegs comprise a bung A, and a draw-off tube B that passes through a central openingin the latter, and has on its outer end a faucet b, and which are attached to the keg by driving the bung A into the bung hole thereof. For driving the bung into the latter, I employ a mallet or hammer that consists of a circular head or striker O and a handle I) projecting from the center of the latter and having such diameter and length as to admit of being readily grasped by the hand. Passing longitudinally through the center of said head and handle is a round opening E of such size as to freely inclose the tube 13, and to enable the mallet to be placed around and removed from the latter, such mallet is provided with a radial slot 6 that extends through it to said opening E. By means of such slot the mallet can be arranged concentrically upon the tube, and guided by the latter, may be reciprocated to administer blows directly and squarely upon the outer end of the bung A. A block or piece F whose exterior conforms to the contour of the exterior of the mallet, is provided to fill the opening a so that the entire surface of the bung may receive the blow, and also to enable the operator to obtain an easier and better grip. It also prevents any beer that finds its way up alongside of the tube from splashing out through said opening 6. The sides of the opening or slot a flare or diverge outwardly, and the sides of the filling block F are correspondingly shaped. Such construction besides rendering easier the passing of the mallet over the tube, than would be possible with an opening with parallel sides, insures the tight fitting of the block Within the opening. To prevent the block being pressed too far and too tightly into the opening or slot 6, said block, on each side at its longitudinal center is provided with a lug or rib f that engages the side of the opening or slot.
In order to make the device as small as possible, and yetto have the required weight, I make it of metal, iron, preferably, and this renders it necessary to provide a cushion G upon the striking face of the head 0 to avoid damage to the bung. Said cushion is preferably of leather, in the form of a ring that is secured in place by an annular plate H, through which and through said cushion, screws 7?. and h are passed into the head 0. Of course, openings are provided in the cushion and plate H, coinciding with the slot 6, and corresponding sections of the said cushion and plate are secured to the lower face of the filling block.
The opening g in the leather ring G is of such diameter that said ring will not strike the usual packing gland (E which is provided in the outer end of the bung A, and which it is necessary to partially remove to relax the pressure upon the packing sufiicientiy to allow the tube B to be moved through said bung. Injury to the thread of the gland is thus avoided.
Immediately over the cushion G is a leather washer I that is seated in a cavity in the face of the head (I, and is held in place by the cushion and the plate H. To hold said washer against rotation, and thus keep a slot i in it, in alignment with the opening or slot 6, such washer is provided with one or more tongues or projections t" that are seated in come spondingly shaped notches in the under side of the head G. V
The washer I fits the tube snugly so as to bear against the same and prevent contact between the sides of the mallet opening E and the tube to the injury of the latter.
To aid in holding the mallet, a strap or loop K is attached to the opposite ends of the block E, and a like strap K to the diametrically opposite side of the handle D, while to draw the tube B out through the bung A, the upper end of the handle is provided with twoclaws L and L to engage the faucet, and a fulcrum piece Z to bear against the bung, to start the tube.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A mallet composed of the part having a central opening and a slot extending into the latter, and a block filling said slot, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A mallet composed of the part having a central opening and a slot with outwardly flaring sides, and a block fitting into and filling said slot, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. A mallet composed of the part having a central opening and a slot and a block filling said slot and having projections to engage the sides thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A mallet having a central opening to freely inclose the tube of a beer tapping apparatus, and provided with a cushion on its striking face, and a washerabove said cushion to snugly fit said tube, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. A mallet having a central opening, and a slot, and provided with a slotted washer that has a tongueor tongues seated in cavities in the face thereof, substantially as and for-the JOHN NEU.
