SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,907, dated January 1, 1895 Application filed August 20, 1894. Serial No. 520,75@ (No model.)

Be it known that We, FRANK IV. CHATTIN and DAVID K. GILBERT, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Tail-Board Fasteners or Locks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of improvementsin tail board fasteners or locks, by means of which the tail board of a Wagon may be tightened against the body thereof, and when the load is to be discharged, the tail board may be released of some of the pressure of said load thereon, and consequently easily removed, said board when in position, being tightly held against the body, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a tail board fastener or lock embodying our invention, and a portion of a wagon body to which the same is applicable. Fig. 2 represents on a reduced scale, an end elevation of the same, showing the tail board unlocked. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation, partially in section of the fastener or lock and its adjunots, the device being turned from the po sition seen in Fig. l. Referring to the drawings: A designates the sides of the body of a wagon, and B the bottom thereof, the latter resting on the cross piece Il, which is secured to the sills C and D, which project beyond said body. The sill D has suitably secured thereto the tail-board standard E.
The opposite sill C has a recess in its upper portion in which is placed the plate J, whose thickness is such that its upper face comes ilush with the bottom of the wagon when placed in position, as seen in Figs. and 2.
K designates a hollow boss or cylindrical shell which depends from said plate J', and which may be integral therewith, said plate having also a squared opening L, which is in alignment With a similar opening in the sill C, thelatter also havinganopeningtherethrough for the reception of the boss K, so that the parts when assembled, appear as in Figs. l and 2, a reinforcing piece M being attached the underside of the sill C if desired.
N designates the opposite tail-board standard which is provided with the squared shank P, which is adapted to enter the opening L of the plate J, and pass through the sill C, and be held in position by a nut or other means. y
Q, designates a tongue attached to said standard N, which is adapted to enter the groove or recess R in the upright rotatable dog or locking device S, the latter having its corners T rounded or cam-shaped so that it can be readily turned into the position seen in dotted lines in Fig. l, the face X of said dog S being substantially straight or at right angles to its sides, said dog having the journal U which has a bearing in the hollow boss K, as seen in Fig. 3.
V designates a squared portion or neck of said journal II, to which a handle N may be attached, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The operation is as follows: The parts are first assembled as seen in Fig. 3. The plate J is then placed is position as seen in Fig. l, and held by tightening the nuts on the threaded portion of the shank I. The dog or locking device S is turned into the position seen in Fig. 2, said dog being limited in its movement by its contact with the face of the standard N, against which it abuts, and being capable of making only a quarter turn, as seen in Figs. l and 4 in dotted lines.
The tail board F is inserted in place, and the dog S is then rotated into the position seen in Figs. l and et, the face X contacting with said tail board and holding it in position, the cleats on said boards preferably contacting with the standard E and said dog S, when the parts are locked in position. If desired, the dog S can be turned by the socket Wrench Y, as shown in Fig. G, the same having a squared projection to lit a similar recess in the journal U.
