A. E. BRION. ADJUSTABLE GHANGEABLE TAPEB REAMER.
No; 531,830. Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT ADOLPI-I E. BRION, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
ADJUSTABLE CHANGEABLE TAPER-REAM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,830, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed April 12, 1894. Serial No. 507,237. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH E. Baron, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Changeable Taper-Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to devices employed for reaming taper holes, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap and eftective reamer provided with adjustable cutters, whereby the line of taper may be changed to suit the work to be done.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists essentially in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts, and peculiarities of construction and opera tion, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial longitudinal section of a reamer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the regulating nut, removed from the shank of the reamer. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view at line 50-06 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a like view at line y-y of the same figure. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of of a fragment of the small end of the reamer, the body thereof being shown in axial section.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is the body of the reamer, made of any preferred material, and provided with a manipulating shank 2. This shank may be either round or square, at 3, to fit a brace, chuck, or the equivalent. The shank 2, is provided with circumferential lines, 4, which represent diderent standard tapers.
At 5 is a screw-thread, wherewith engages a nut 6, having a daring skirt, 7, connected thereto or formed therewith.
The body 1, is provided with longitudinal grooves, 8, wherein play cutting jaws 9. The bottoms of the grooves 8 run parallel to the axis of the body 1, and the jaws 9, are much deeper at the inner end than at their pivots. Consequently as the said jaws are thrown outward at the inner extremities, they still have ample bearings in the holding grooves 8. I have shown but three such grooves and jaws, but it is obvious that any desired number may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention. The jaws 9, are pivoted upon pins, 10 at the smaller end of the body 1, and are rounded, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 5.
l1 is a. cap, engaging with a screw-threaded projection 12, at the small end of the body 1, this cap having a groove formed in its inner face, conforming to the rounded ends of the cutting jaws, and constituting a bearing for the said ends as they move upon the pins 10.
13 are screws, passing through the body 1 of the reamer, and bearing against the backs of the movable jaws 9, as shown in Fig. 3.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, the operation of my improved, adj ustablc, changeable taper reamer, is as follows: The proper size of reamer being selected, the nut 6, is turned until its inner edge registers with the line 4 showing the requisite taper for the work to be done. The screws 13 are now brought snugly in contact with the backs of the cutting jaws, forcing and holding them out the proper distance, the limit of such movement of said jaws being regulated by their inner extremities engaging with the daring skirt 7, projecting from the nut 6. The screws 13 are shown as forming a simple and eftective method of holding the cutting jaws out to place, but I do not wish to be understood as confining myself strictly to this particular method.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective means for regulating the cutting j awe of a taper reamer, whereby the single tool embodies a variety of changeable tapers.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an adjustable, changeable taper reamer, a body, having a plurality of cutting jaws pivoted at its smaller end; an adjusting nut engaging with said jaws at the opposite end, and adjustable bearings at the rear of said cutting jaws, the whole combined and arranged to operate, substantially as shown and described.
ADOLPH E. BRION.
